Tournament Week Wrap Up

The weather for Tournament Week 2012 was significantly better than the snowy front that swept up the country just days before. With teams spread from Nelson to Alexandra St Kevin's College was well represented by all of the students participating and whilst overall results did not go in our favour we must acknowledge and congratulate our U15 Rugby Boys who placed 6th in their competition and were also awarded Best All Round Team. Well done!

Special Character - Brother Damien's Visit

The school has enjoyed a visit by Brother Damien who is responsible for formation in the Edmund Rice Oceania network. He has been working with staff and students to link the College Values to scripture. This has been a very enriching experience and the outcomes will carry us forward on our faith journey. Brother Damien has been visiting the College for a few years now, but will move to Kenya and Tanzania soon to continue his formation work there. We wish him all the best for his future and thank him with all our hearts for the wonderful input he has given to our St Kevin's College Community.

We are also looking forward to our Spring Mass this coming Sunday and extend a warm invitation to all of the local community to join us. The service will begin at 7.00pm in the College Chapel.

National Title Winner

St Kevin's College has a national title holder and it comes in the form of Year 12 student Sean Hand who won the national Lions Clubs' International Young Speechmaker Contest in Napier last weekend. The contest consisted of a two minute impromptu speech on the subject of humility and a six minute prepared speech on a personal choice subject - Sean chose to speak about methamphetamine. As the winner he will travel to Canada and the US to compete internationally. Maeve Ryan also represented the College in Napier and competed well against the other speakers. Congratulations!

Special Presentation

At a Special Character Meeting this week we were delighted to present Br Don Murray with a special commemorative shield in recognition of his years of service to St Kevin's College. Br Murray is moving to Auckland to continue his wonderful work with the Christian Brothers.

Pasifika Fono

The Pasifika Fono made us more aware of the needs of pasifika students and how we could accommodate these needs. The positive outcome is that we have started a pasifika group this week which will be lead by Henry Ahomana who so ably represented the College at the Fono.

Ball Committee Success

The success of our School Ball was the result of the months of voluntary work done by Ann Maree Forgie (pictured above with daughter and ex student Summer) and her right hand lady, Bronwyn Hannigan. Ann Maree was in her element motivating the Ball Committee students to make their dream of having a Hollywood theme become a reality. Both Ann Maree and Bronwyn found and booked the amazing band, The Mojos. Hours were spent making decorations and a lot of fun was had by all involved, helping build the excitement and anticipation leading up to the Ball, capped off with the wonderful black and gold ball tickets created by Denece Rae.

We were very proud of our students who all arrived on time to be breathalysed ... and who all passed the zero limit. The Ball Parade was wonderful and set the scene for the rest of the evening, with the students led by a piper up the candlelit drive (thanks to Debbie and Mark Esselink).

Sunday Skiing

On Sunday 21 August the weather was right and the snow was fresh. The van was loaded up at 6.30am and Mr Hitchcock, Mr Brand, the Olsens and an eager group of students headed off to Ohau Ski Field. The fresh snow was dry and the conditions perfect - not a cloud in the sky. A great day was had by all.

Special Character - Assumption Liturgy

Today staff and students celebrated the feast of the Assumption with a liturgy in the College Chapel. This is an important day for the Catholic community as it is the principal feast of the Blessed Virgin, the mother of Jesus Christ. It commemorates the departure of Mary from this life and the assumption of her body to heaven and is a time when we reflect and remember all those close to us who have passed on.

Ball Photo Orders

Ball and Ball Parade photos are available to view via the Kolourcare website (www.kolourcare.co.nz) and orders may be placed directly with them through the internet. Alternatively order forms can be mailed to Kolourcare and these are available from the School Office.

Br Don Murray

Today we recognise the amazing contribution to the College of Brother Don Murray who is standing down as the Proprietor's Representative on our Board of Trustees. Br Murray has had an association with St Kevin's since 1946, when he was enrolled as a student. He returned on staff from 1964-1970 and then from 1975-1994, during which time he lead the rugby charge at the College as Coach for the 1st XV. He has served in various capacities on the original Board of Governors, now known at the Board Of Trustees. To this wonderful man who will be fondly remembered by many, we thank him for all of the years that he has dedicated to the Special Character of St Kevin's and wish him all the very best.

Winter Snow Part Two

A persistent southerly front brought snow to Oamaru for a second time this winter, with hazardous roads in the surrounding areas resulting in a much reduced school population for the day. After helping with the task of clearing hostel paths our boarding students were able to enjoy a range of activities and study opportunities at the College.

Helen Clarks Oamaru Visit

A flying yet full visit to Oamaru by Helen Clark gave several of our students the opportunity to meet with her and listen to her speak. She was the key note speaker at the Hearts and Hands for Haiti New Zealand fundraiser at the Oamaru Opera House on Thursday evening (pictured above with members of the JAG Club) and met and spoke with senior students the following day (below).

Class Act

Congratulations to our Deputy Head Students, Maeve Ryan and Fergus Farrell, who were the St Kevin's College Class Act recipients for 2011. Senior Quad Tournament Wrap Up

This week has seen the first annual Senior Quadrangular Tournament between ourselves, Kavanagh College, St Peter's College and Verdon College - held this year in Gore. In an outstanding effort from all of our sporting teams we were delighted to be able to bring the tournament trophy (donated by Bishop Boyle) home to Oamaru.

Boys 1st XI Hockey:
Our first game for the day ended in a nil all draw against St Peter's College. The boys were missing a few regular players but the younger ones stepped up and played very well. Our second game against Kavanagh saw us win 1-nil. An exciting game with the team playing much better than the first match. The third and final game against Verdon was always going to be tough - however the boys played with determination and worked hard to secure a 3-nil win. Our points total for the day put us in first place! A very exciting day in beautiful weather conditions. The team played well together with some stand out work done by Logan Chandler, the two backs - Brendon Eade and Braden Grundy, Paul Stratton and our magnificent goalie William Harrison who did not concede any goals all day! Well done boys - you played with great team spirit and sportsmanship. Thanks also to Coreen Daily (manager) for all her assistance and organisation.

1st XI Football:
Congratulations to all of our Boys 1st XI Football Team who set the benchmark by scoring the most goals and conceding the least (for 11, against 4). A great effort by Michael Hannigan who score 6 goals in the game against St Peter's College.

On the field for the Girls 2st XI Football Team an outstanding effort saw Kulani Aplin score a hat trick against Kavanagh College.

Girls 1st XI Hockey:
Congratulations to our Girls 1st XI Hockey team who had a great game against St Peter's College, winning 2-1. Standout players for the match were Sinnead Flannery who scored an exciting first half goal, matched by Rose Harrison in the same half. The girls then worked hard as a team to hold off the St Peter's attack. Well done.

Prime Minister Visits Oamaru

On Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister John Key addressed local secondary school students. His message was simple: while talent will help you to achieve, it is your attitude and how you apply yourself that will ultimately determine your success. Mr Key answered student questions and at the end of proceedings took the opportunity to engage informally with students.

Staff Farewell

This week marks the last day at the College for Geography teacher Mrs Penny Munro. Mrs Munro has taught at the school since the beginning of 2002 and during her time with us she has taken many of our senior students out into the field with regular trips to Mount Cook and other geographical landmarks, as well as teaching other curriculum subjects such as Religious Studies and Economics. She has also played a major part in the area of boys and girls hockey, taking on the role of Teacher in Charge of this successful sport for the College. Known for her regular mid-day runs, she will still be seen pounding the pavement of Oamaru as she takes up her new position as Teacher in Charge of Careers at Waitaki Boys High School. We wish her all the very best and thank her for her contribution to the College.

Busy Holidays

Several of our students were exceptionally busy during the July School Holidays. Year 9 Golfer Zain Pennycook celebrated a hole in one at the Lower Waitaki Golf Club which will see his name go on the club's honour board. Atalya Aitcheson (Year 10) took to the stage in the Oamaru Operatic theatre restaurant production of "How The West Was Sung" and fellow performer Henry Ahomana (Year 12) was placed runner up in the "Classic Hits Idol" held on Sunday 31 July. Well done!

Welcome to the SKC Family

This term we are delighted to welcome Mr Ryan Gower as our new Mathematics teacher. Mr Gower has taught previously at the College and returns from Christchurch Boys High School with his wife and children. We also extend a warm welcome to Sara Plunkett who is here for 7 weeks as part of her teacher training with Victoria University. As a local artist Sara will be enjoying working with staff and students in our Art Department.

Winter Snow

A thick blanket of snow fell in Oamaru during the July holidays, creating a winter wonderland.

Waitaki Interschool Rugby

The score did not reflect the spirit and drive of our 1st XV during last terms interschool against Waitaki Boys' High School. The Special Character of the College shone through and the rallying supporters bank could be heard throughout the surrounding neighbourhood.
