Congratulations to Mr Owen Gould, the St Kevin's College Girls rowing coach, who won the SPARC Otago Sport Volunteer of the Year Award at a breakfast function in Dunedin yesterday. He was supported at this special event by the senior girls (pictured). Owen gives up months of his time each year to coach our rowing students and this award is extremely well deserved.

Several of our Yr12 students met with Marty Taylor who came to speak with them about preparations for the India Immersion Trip that will take place during the summer holidays. For the past few years we have been working in with our fellow Ricean School, St Thomas of Canterbury, applying the Edmund Rice charism to the modern day world. Our Year 12 students are also being given the opportunity to train as Eucharistic Ministers ahead of their year as leaders of the College in 2012.

At this week's Vigil Mass Certificates of Appreciation are being given to the following students:

Rugby World Cup Mufti Day Fundraising

A touch of fun to the Mufti Day held this week saw students and staff dressing up in support of their adopted Rugby World Cup countries. The mufti days held throughout the year raise funds for a variety of charities including Caritas, Canteen and the College's sponsored child.

Spirit Of Adventure Trust Search For Lost Alumni

Ten years ago the voyage records of past Spirit of NZ and Spirit of Adventure sailings were destroyed in a devastating flood. A campaign is now underway to reconnect the Spirit of Adventure Trust with as many former voyagers as possible. This "Lost Alumni" campaign is aimed at anyone who has sailed on the Spirit of NZ or Spirit of Adventure and aims to capture details and photos from past sailings - as well as find people interested in supporting the Trust. As part of the campaign the Trust's principal corporate partner, Hyundai Motors, has launched a Facebook application wwww.facebook.com/HyundaiNZ for registrations.

Subject Selection For 2012

This week students who intend to study NCEA next year were handed Course Information Booklets and an individual list of recommended subjects for study in 2012. Our Course Information Booklets for 2012 can be viewed in full on our College website.

Subject selection is an important decision and we welcome your input and encourage all parents, caregivers and whanau to discuss the subjects put forward with students. Students must make an appointment to see the appropriate Year Level Dean for 2012 if they need to clarify their preferences for next year's study.

Please remember that any course of study is dependent on individual subject availability, NCEA Examination results and staffing levels for next year.

Year 12 Biology At The Rocky Shore

Year 12 Biology students completed a distribution pattern study for a Rocky Shore at All Day Bay on Monday. Despite the weather being a bit wild (very windy!) the students managed to collate data about organisms' location on the platform as well as several environmental factors that may explain why they were found in these positions.

Hostel Working Bee

The wood chips were flying during a Hostel Working Bee last weekend. Earlier in the year a number of trees behind the Boys' Hostel were felled and with the warmer weather came the opportunity to get it all cut, split and stacked ready for future sale - keep an eye out for details about this! Our thanks to Bransby Lill, Adam Polsen and Colin Stevens who came on board with Mr Olsen, Mr Fowler and their team of hostel boys. What a great effort.

International Hockey Exchange

Over the last few days our Girls 1st XI Hockey Team have hosted a team from The Grange School in Chile and gave the Oamaru Hockey Turf a truly international flavour with a game played this week. Both teams fought hard to keep the score held at nil all until our international visitors managed to break through with a final result in their favour 2:0. We wish them well for the rest of their travels.

Girls Rugby Representation

St Kevin's College Girls Rugby XV Players Megan Manson, Raewyn Gregory-Hunt & Maree Sturkenboom have all been selected for the Girls South Island Rugby Team after a successful tournament with the Hanan Shield Girls Team. Well done Girls on your efforts.

Netball End Of Season

It was a big day at the Hine Marae Netball Courts with the competition finals held last Saturday. Our St Kevin's teams played with the enthusiasm and pride for which the College is known and can be proud of good results across the board. While the full, final results are yet to be circulated the Senior A girls finished 4th in their division, Senior B 8th and Intermediate A 6th. Canoe Polo

The Canoe Polo enthusiasts have been having a fantastic time at the Waitaki Aquatic Centre this term. Seven keen teams, including several adult community members, hostel gappers, a St Joseph's student and most of the Yr9 hostel boys, duke it out every Friday evening on the watery "turf". We even have a WBHS team who are holding their own in the draw. Next week will see the start of the two week finals draw.

The Great Gallagher Race

The College was very proud to have the Girls Rowing 8 invited to the Waikato last weekend to row in The Great Gallagher Race. With two boats on the river for each race a time trail on Saturday saw the crew able to pick their own course and successfully seeded third before rowing in the B Final the following day against Baradene from Auckland, finishing fourth overall.

The weekend was an excellent experience for the crew and the strategic differences of rowing in a river against a current, having to plot a course along a bank and then cross through bridges was a wonderful learning opportunity. However the Girls Rowing 8 held their own putting on a great performance in tricky circumstances, with more experienced crews crashing into bridge pylons and each other!

The event was superbly organised, and our thanks to Waikato Dio who lent the girls gear and offered the use of their shed for the event. Well done.

North Otago Basketball Collegiate Finals

St Kevin's had 3 finals to playoff on Wednesday night. The Yr9A boys played OIS Makos for the Yr9 Championship. After a slow stat Josh Macaulay, William Sunderland and Raji Singh got the game under control leading by 10 at the end of the 3rd quarter and held that through to win 47:36.

Next was our Yr10A Girls vs WGHA Red. Our girls came out strong, quickly springing out to lead 20:0. With Merekite Wahitapu, Shannon Vince and Helena Graham playing big roles, we switched to playing the whole bench and enjoying the match. Ashley Te Maharoa and Rose Anderson took this opportunity to shine with the final score a great team win, a convincing 79:19.

The final game was our 10A Boys vs WBHS Juniors. They came out muscled up and outplayed us. After beating them all year it was unsettling and it took the lads some time to get their game back. Thanks to Kaz Kobayshi and Hamish Robertson who held them close till Jashiv Narayn and Josh Botting stepped up and took us out to an intense low scoring win 17:24.

We were proud to congratulate Helena Graham and Hamish Robertson who were awarded the Best and Fairest Awards for the competition and all of the players were presented with their trophies at the College Assembly on Thursday. An excellent effort!

Special Character - Spring Mass

Our annual Spring Mass was held last Sunday amidst a profusion of spring flowers. "From darkness to light" was the theme. Hannah Miraere, Brittany More, Sarah Dooley and Tiana Mihaere celebrated colour through movement, with the Edmund Rice Singers beautiful performance a highlight of the Mass. Brother Damien Price preached about being "True to our colour". Our grateful thanks to Helen Mulheron for this wonderful Mass. Helen has been organising Spring Masses in our chapel for the past 22 years having been inspired by a Spring Church service in Westminster.

The Year 9 girls from the Hostel celebrated the arrival of Spring with a picnic at Willowpark, Papakaio. Our thanks to Jodi Ryan for acting as chaperon for the day and to hosts Gloria and Ian Hurst.

The tour would start after Easter Weekend for ten days and the cost of the tour would be a maximum of $2500.00 per student.

We are asking for expressions of interest from 2012 Year 11-13 pupils and parents who would be interested in going. Please contact the School Office by 7th September if you are interested.
