Principal'sChristmas Message

Kia ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

The term has had an academic focus with NCEA and Cambridge assessments challenging our seniors. The juniors have rounded off the year with assessments, camp and activity week.

Notable milestones for the term include:
· Farewelling a tremendous group of senior students at the Graduation Dinner held at the Homestead with past pupil Charlie O’Connell as the guest speaker.
· Seeing student lead performances with the haka presentations in the junior performance unit. This had a focus on team work and leadership.
· Celebration of Pasifika achievement in the Fono which was held at the College. It showcased the success of our many talented Pasifika students.
· Recognition of exceptional dedication and service as we said goodbye to rowing coach Stewart Mitchell as he left to heed north in retirement.
We are a strong and vibrant community that celebrated achievement, diversity and dedication. We are a College that seeks to live in the way of Edmund Rice and St Dominic our patrons.

As the junior choir sing Silent Night and Away in a Manger in preparation for the final prizegiving liturgy, it is a timely reminder that the year is fast drawing to a close. We have entered the Advent Season, which is a time of reflection on the year that was and preparation for the future, symbolised in the Christmas Story. It is this message of hope that is central to our Christian faith. The prizegiving liturgy makes the link to the 100th anniversary of World War One and the famous “Christmas Truce”. For a fleeting moment both British and German troops ceased fire and went so far as to have a game of football and exchange mementos. It is this linkage to historical events that helps us to learn from these tragic events and cherish the quality of life we enjoy as a wider school family and a College of Special Character.

May you receive every Christmas blessing, spend time with family and remember the true meaning of the season which is often hidden behind the Christmas tinsel and marketing.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Paul Olsen, Principal

Otago Cricket Rep

Congratulations to Amber Cunningham who was named in the Otago U15 Girls Cricket team this week following final trials last weekend.  Amber will travel with the team to a national tournament in Whanganui in January.  Well done!

Year 10 Camp 2014

While a dull drizzle hampered some activities later in the week, the overall weather conditions for Y10 Camp were ideal.  This particular camp is always considered to be a highlight of a student's time at St Kevin's and this year was no exception.  Thank you to Mr Collins and all of the staff who chaperoned and fed students throughout the week, and also to the student helpers who also attended.

Year 9 Activities Week

Year 9 students have had the run of the College to themselves this week and a wide range of activities has ensured they always had something to do.  From Taekwondo to baking, mask making to water slides ... a movie and a swim with some ten pin bowling thrown in for good measure.  Thank you to Ms Walshe and her team for facilitating this great week.

Kia ora Kevinian's and Supporters of the College

This week Silent Night and Away in a Manger could be heard when passing the Auditorium. The Junior Choir have been polishing their advent hymns and carols for the final prizegiving liturgy. It is a timely reminder that not only is the year fast drawing to a close, but more importantly we have entered the Advent Season. Advent is a time of reflection on the year that was and preparation, anticipation and hope for the future, symbolised in the Christmas Story. It is this message of hope that is central to our Christian faith. It is a well of strength to draw from in times of challenge. The death of past pupil, Shaun Kelliher this week shook our community to the core. Past pupils gathered in the Chapel on Monday afternoon for a liturgy. It was a time of loss, sorrow and of inadequacy, with an overwhelming feeling of solidarity and faith. At the conclusion, the boys performed a haka and we gathered at Redcastle for a cup of tea. Our prayers are with Mark, Suzanne and the boys as they come to grips with the tragic loss of Shaun. Mr Dixon, our guidance counselor is available to talk to anyone who would like some support and is happy to take a phone call from past students and those at a distance.

On Monday and Tuesday we welcomed Brother Joe Lauren and Brother Bernard Gartland to the College. Br Joe has been a member of the Brother’s Oceania Leadership Team with responsibility for the College and is transitioning the role to Br Bernie. It was a pleasure to be able to show them the developments we have been working on over the last year and receive an update from their perspective. The brothers had the opportunity to meet our Board of Trustees Chair, Steven Bolstridge, Foundation Chair, Terry Cooney and Baxter Smith who represented the Hostel Trust. We extend our thanks and appreciation to Br Joe for the work he has done championing our College over the past twelve years.

May God bless you this advent season.

Ashburton Club Regatta

SKC rowing brought home 4 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal at the Ashburton Club Regatta at the weekend.  Hard work and dedication paid off for Adam Sew Hoy and Kalas Taukamo who combined with 2 Waitaki athletes to bring home gold in the U16 Quad and U16 Four.  They then followed this up with a commanding performance in their Double to take the silver.  Sydney Telfer and Maysie Scott (WGHS) with continued strong performances took home 2 golds in the Women's Open and Club Doubles.  Georgia Dyson and Molly Kay teamed up with 2 Craighead atheletes to win a bronze in the U16 Quad with Katie McKeown coxing.  Molly Kay also coxed the boys U16 Four in a gold medal winning performance.  Well done to all the SKC and Y8 atheletes who attended the regatta.  The build up to a great season will continue with the Otago Regatta in December.

Graduates Final Farewell

On Saturday evening our Year 13 Graduates gathered at the Homestead in Oamaru for a final farewell from St Kevin's College, celebrating with family and staff at the 2014 Graduation Dinner.  The guest speaker for the evening was Otago rugby captain Charlie O'Connell and he recounted his time at St Kevin's and his path to success with both rugby and an executive career.  Whilst not always a smooth ride he encouraged our graduates to persevere with their goals and aim high.  On behalf of the College we wish all of our Year 13 Graduates the very best as they head out to the world to continue their studies or begin career paths of their own.

Principal's Comment

Kia ora Kevinian's and Supporters of the College

Passionate kapahaka challenges have echoed around the campus this week in preparation for Friday's Junior Performance Unit competition. This work is an outstanding example of student directed learning. The deeper learning that occurs is a tribute to the dedication of the Physical Education Faculty. As a College we have observed development in student leadership, teamwork, group work, tolerance and perseverance. I look forward to seeing the emerging leaders contribute to building a strong College family in following years.

On Wednesday the White Ribbon Riders were formally welcomed to the College. The article and images later in the blog show the warm welcome and strong links that are being made with our core values. Thank you to Sargent Jason McCoy, Mrs Helen Algar and the local riders who took the time to share this important anti family violence message with the students. It was fitting that Leslie Elliott from the Sophie Elliott Foundation shared her powerful experience about healthy relationships and we look forward to continuing this work with the Love Me Not programme.

This evening we are hosting the North Otago Pasifika Fono in the Auditorium. This is an opportunity to celebrate the success and achievement of our Pasifika youth. Thank you to Mrs Tina Dooley and Mrs Margaret Burton for facilitating this event.

Finally can you keep in your prayers Br Arthur O'Kane who has had a long association with the College and is currently not well, and also Jenny Dixon, wife of Russell, and June Campbell who are recovering from surgery.

May God bless you all this Advent Season
Paul Olsen, Principal

Junior Performance Unit

Today our Yr9 and Yr10 students filled the gymnasium with the cries of the College haka and the high energy of an aerobics/dance routine as they took on the challenge of creating a team performance for our judges.  A full breakdown of results will be posted on Monday but congratulations to everyone on some great performances.

Healthy Habits

BEING SUN SMART - SLIP, SLOP, SLAP AND WRAP

It’s not hard to be Sun Smart. Research has shown that too much UV radiation causes sunburn, which can lead to skin cancer, and those cancers can be deadly. UV radiation can also damage your skin in other ways, causing premature ageing and wrinkles.

In New Zealand we are lucky to have clear skies and little pollution, but that contributes to very high levels of UV radiation in our environment. Our weather is also changeable – a rainy morning may mean we might leave the house without the sun protection we need if the sun comes out later. And even if the sun doesn’t come out and temperatures stay low, UV radiation levels can still be high enough to cause sunburn.
That’s why you need to be Sun Smart, especially during daylight saving months (September to April), and between 10am to 4pm when the sun’s UV rays are strongest. And don’t forget younger children. They most definitely need to slip, slop, slap, and wrap, too. Nearly 80% of lifetime sun exposure happens after the age of 18, so it’s important to make sun protection a life-long habit, starting as young as possible.

White Ribbon Ride 2014

Today the College welcomed the White Ribbon Riders as they called through Oamaru as part of their annual national ride.  This exciting initiative is a powerful reminder about the effects of violence on our families and communities, yet provides inspirational stories of change and courage.

In preparation for the visit our junior boys took to the kitchen yesterday, baking a chocolate oat slice for today's afternoon tea.  With the familiar loud rumble of motorbikes the riders (with Mr Olsen on board) were greeted with the College Haka from our Yr9 and Yr10 students before Leslie Elliott from the Sophie Elliott Foundation spoke to them about the significance of what the riders were doing nationwide.  The chocolate slice was served and while students took the opportunity to admire the bikes close up, Levi Emery got a birthday treat with a blat round the College on a bike!

Principal's Comment

Kia Ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College.

NCEA examinations and junior end of year assessments have progressed seamlessly this week. In between marking and report writing, staff are taking the opportunity to work on plans for 2015.

One of the major areas for development is an extension of the range of VPath courses being offered for seniors and the development of the FlexiFriday arrangements.

FlexiFriday will be of benefit to all seniors. Those heading to VPath courses and Gateway programmes will not have the issue of missing class and having to catch up and our academics will be able to focus on achievement standards that meet their needs in smaller classes. Thank you to the Heads of Faculty for there commitment to making this happen.

Next Friday our junior students will present their Yr9 and Yr10 Performance Units in the gymnasium.  They have spent their physical education periods collaborating together and creating routines to share with other students and staff in a spirited inter-class competition.  It begins after lunch and I invite you to join us.

On Wednesday the College is looking forward to welcoming the White Ribbon Ride into Oamaru.  This very visual initiative tackles the issue of domestic violence in New Zealand and our students always make a very good impression on the riders in the way they present themselves and represent the values of the College when they visit each year.

Finally, as we move into the last three weeks of the school year, I encourage our junior students to make the most of the opportunities extended to them in the way of the upcoming Year 10 Camp and Year 9 Activities Week.  Thank you to the staff and volunteers who give up their time to make these events run so smoothly each year.

May God Bless you all

Thanks To A Rowing Stalwart

Thank you James at the Oamaru Mail for this lovely photo
Oamaru Rowing Club stalwart Stew Mitchell has been a consistent presence in the realm of College rowing since his return to Oamaru in 1997.  His association with the Oamaru Rowing Club began back in the 1956-57 season when he and some friends joined the club as a way of keeping fit during the summer for rugby.  Following success at a regatta at Lake Wakatipu Stew was approached by coach Russell "Rusty" Robertson and he cites his influence as being instrumental in the development of local rowing.  Work transfers saw him prominent in rowing clubs in Blenheim, Wellington and Christchurch before settling back into the local community at Kakanui and re-involving himself with the Oamaru Rowing Club.  It was during this time that the club changed it's focus to attracting students and his association with the College began.  For 14 years he has coached our rowing athletes and was the first coach of the Girls Rowing 8 which achieved consecutive Maadi success from 2009.  World medalist Johannah Kearney still refers to Stew as her first rowing coach.  His enthusiasm for the sport and the young athletes he has mentored over the years is reflected in the high regard to which he is held.  Stew is totally inclusive of all rowing athletes, seeing the diamonds in the rough and bringing out the best in them in order for them to succeed, whatever that level of success might be.  He has been instrumental in the rebuilding of rowing numbers at the College in recent years through his guidance and support of any students wanting to give rowing a go.  As you move on to your next adventure we thank you Stew, the success of our athletes is a reflection of your dedication and reward for your passion of this high level sport.

Cricketing Star

Thank you to James at the Oamaru Mail for this great shot of Amber in action.
Year 9 students Amber Cunningham is making her mark in the cricket oval.  She put on the North Otago U15 Girls colours in the weekend to match up against the Dunedin U15 at Milner Park.  Displaying superb bowling skill she took 4/12 off 6.4 overs including a Hat Trick, restricting the opposition to a total of 111.  She also posted an impressive 63 runs.  North Otago took the win by 6 wickets.

Principal's Message

Kia ora Kevinian's and Supporters of the College

The commencement of NCEA examinations has been the primary focus for senior students this week and it has been pleasing to see a number of them taking up the offers of tutorial support from teaching staff. Whilst Mr Dixon will be away next week our staff are always available to support students during this stressful and demanding time. Thank you to Mrs Potter and her team for the work involved in assisting the NCEA staff running the examinations.

Our junior students will have three days of examinations beginning on Monday.  Like our seniors, they are encouraged to come well prepared and ensure that they have everything they need before they enter the exam room.  This is excellent preparation of habits for College life in the senior school.

This week the College has had a presence at the Canterbury A&P Show and I was pleased to be able to join Mr Fowler for the last day and catch up with past pupils and greet prospective parents and students.

Year 10 Camp meetings have begun and parents and caregivers are encouraged to ensure that permission slips are returned (or e-permissions submitted) as soon as possible. This camp is often considered to be a highlight of a student's time at the College and I always enjoy the opportunity to visit the camps and assist with instruction.  Thank you to Mr Collins and those involved in preparing our Year 10 students for this experience.

Finally I ask that you keep Mr Dixon and his family in your prayers as Mrs Dixon undergoes surgery.

May God bless you all

Year 10 Camp Information

Memories from 2013
The annual Yr10 Camp will be held during the last week of this term.  This camp is an extremely enjoyable experience for students and it often becomes the highlight of their time at the College.  The four days at camp will be spent in the Hopkin's Valley area (near Twizel).  There are three separate camps;  Huxley Lodge where students will have a retreat, Lake Middleton for water based activities and mountain biking, and Temple Stream where students camp overnight in tents and learn bushcraft skills.  Students spend a day at each camp, rotating to get a turn at each one.

Kia ora Kevinian's and Supporters of the College

Recognition of excellence and genuine celebration of achievement are all part of the motivational tool kit for effective teachers. They are "carrots" that publicly reinforce learning and encourage success. At St Kevin's, we use the full range: the Hillary and Sheppard Awards recognise the achievement of short term goals, the Dominican Academic Awards look at longer term academic success and the Celebration of Sport and Celebration of Culture and Couture recognise curricular excellence. Tuesday's end of year prizegiving Mass and Graduation is the premier occasion for the College community to publicly acknowledge the year's achievements. My congratulations to the many students who passed across the stage during the evening. In particular I wish to acknowledge our Dux for 2014, Georgia Holland.

Last weekend I attended the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Gold Award 2014 presentations in Christchurch. I was privileged to support Kelisha Jones and past pupil Kieran Ryan who had their awards presented by the Governor General, Sir Jerry Mateparae.

Other celebrations held this week have been the very successful Hostel Dinner and the International Student Dinner. These are an opportunity to thank staff for their time and effort as well as farewell our leavers. The formal leaver's Graduation Dinner is held after NCEA examinations conclude.

Thank you to the Home and School Committee who met on Monday and distributed $14,000 to projects through out the school. This Saturday, the team will be making truffles for sale at the Victorian Fete, to be held the following weekend. Please take the opportunity to purchase some if you are at the fete.

Finally it was a pleasure to be able to have our senior students pass over the mantel of leadership to the those selected for the 2015 school year. Congratulations to:
Head Boy - Brady Kingan
Head Girl - Sydney Telfer
Deputy Head Boy - Michael Lockley
Deputy Head Girl - Ilaisipa Tahaafe
Deputy Head Boy Special Character - Jack Sinclair
Deputy Head Girl Special Character - Julia Fauth
My sincere thanks to the leaders of 2014 for a job well done.

Equestrian Arena Grand Opening

There was a brief interlude in the stormy weather on Friday, just in time to deliver sunshine and blue skies for the official opening of the Equestrian Arena.  A crowd of invited guests were welcomed by Mr Ryan before Father Wayne gave a blessing.  The Mayor, Mr Gary Kircher, then spoke and cut the red ribbon, opening the gates to allow Mr Baxter Smith the honour of being the first rider into the officially opened arena.  Guests were treated to a balance exercise display by Ingela Anklew (Tutor) and young Miss Bridie McGeown, followed by a pattern riding exercise from Ella Sanderson, Monique Sage, Georgia Sillibourne, Caitlin Middlemiss, Roshni Crow and Casey Gordon.  An afternoon tea in the College Staff Room rounded out the afternoon, with a special cake made by Mrs June Campbell just for the occasion.  Our sincerest thanks to all of the people who have supported this development:  The St Kevin's College Board of Trustees, Alan Grant, Ingela Anklew, Kelepi Funaki, Logan Chandler, Mark Watson, Avimore Irrigation, Grey-Smith Contracting/Awamoa Bins, PGG Wrightson Ltd, Placemakers-Geoff Brown Building Supplies, Whitestone Contracting, Michael Wills Contracting, Nick Stanger-Stanger Fencing, Will Sillibourne, the Craig family, Liam Perriam, Lukairnn Holden, Road Metals Ltd and Peter Murdoch Transport.

Kia Ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

This week the College has been quietly busy, preparing for the next Tuesday which will see our senior students presented with their academic awards and graduation certificates at the Senior Prize Giving for 2014.  The evening will begin at 7pm in the College Chapel and we extend a warm invitation to all of our College Community to join us.

Yesterday we were delighted to have our incoming Year 9 students and their parents visit the College for Orientation Day.  Thank you to Ms Walshe and her team for all of their work in preparing and presenting the day, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.  I look forward to seeing them all again when school begins next year.

Neither rain nor thunderstorms stopped the grand opening of our Equestrian Arena today and we were honoured to have the Mayor, Mr Gary Kircher, officially open the arena and to be joined by so many of our College Community.  On behalf of the College we are extremely grateful to all of the business and families who have contributed towards this development.  A special thank you to Mr Alan Grant and Mr Mark Watson who have worked tirelessly ahead of today.

Students thoughts have been focused towards examinations this week with seniors receiving important last minute information about their upcoming NCEA exams.  A reminder that teaching staff will be available for additional assistance and tutorials.  The Cambridge exams have already begun and we are looking forward to the same high level of achievement as was gained last year.

Finally, the College gathered in the Chapel today to celebrate All Saints Day with a special mass.  Thank you to Father Wayne for joining us, and for staying on to bless the Equestrian Arena.

Mr Olsen returns to school next week and we look forward to hearing of his time in Nepal.

May God bless you all.

Relay For Life Kicks Off

Mr Ryan became the poster child for Relay For Life at assembly this week when Laura Hesselwood, Vincent Adams and Josh McIntyre presented him with a new look!   Relay For Life is on in Oamaru next March and we are looking for a strong contingent of support from the College.

National Maori Hockey Champion

Every year at Labour Weekend a National Maori Hockey Tournament takes place with teams from all over New Zealand, divided into rohe (local area).  This is the 22nd year this has been held and only the first time the tournament has been held in the South Island.  GypsyMae Harihona-Harrison was selected to represent Te Waipounamu ki Waitaha, with most of the players coming from the Canterbury area.

The tournament was held at Nunweek Park, Christchurch, from Friday 24th through to Sunday evening.  Fourteen teams registered for this event, eight womens and six men.

GypsyMae's team held some strong players coming from the secondary schools premiere grade and included Black Stick, Jordan Grant who competed in this year's Commonwealth Games.  Even with such a solid team all the games were hard fought for, where Waitaha were able to go into the final against defending champions Waiariki (Rotorua) to win the National Women's Title 1-0.  The team stats were 16 goals for, 3 against over the total competition.

GypsyMae's impressive performance showed she could hold her own as a contributing team member playing positions ranging from left and right-back through to mid-field. This was a great opportunity for GypsyMae to gain knowledge and experience from some national and world class players.  She is also stoked to be a National Maori Hockey Champion as well!

Kia Ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

The end of another busy week at the College has arrived and I must congratulate Ms Walshe and her team for their efforts in staging our Culture and Couture evening last night in the Auditorium. As a College we are always very proud of the diversity within our student body and to be able to celebrate their cultural successes with so many friends and family was an honour. Well done to all of the students who were acknowledged and to our Cultural Blues recipients and Premier Award winners, a special congratulations.

On Tuesday our Year 13 students gathered together at the Dean O'Reilly Lounge for the first of their celebrations as they come to the end of their time at the College.  The Rite of Passage is a time for them to reflect on how far they have all come since arriving at St Kevin's.  Thank you to Mr Mullally and Mr Farrell for facilitating a special evening for our upcoming graduates.

Next week continues with significant events for the College. We will welcome the 2015 Year 9 intake at our annual Orientation Day and we will also host the Mayor and other invited guests for the grand opening of our Equestrian Arena. It has been wonderful to see students utilising the facility already and practicing their displays for Friday's event.

Finally, with the College closed on Monday it is an ideal time for students to recharge before the final countdown to the first NCEA end of year examinations for 2014. I expect all of our students to take full advantage of the additional tutorials and study sessions that teaching staff are offering, both now and after the Senior Prize Giving on 4 November.

May God bless you all.

Culture and Couture

Last night the Auditorium was oozing culture as we celebrated that very diverse side of College life.  MC for the evening was Jai Narayan who teamed up with fellow Yr13 student Tessa Newton for one of the many performance items throughout the evening.  Included in the evening programme was a fashion show, featuring designs from the Yr 12 & 13 class of Textile Technology students.  We were delighted to welcome back to the College past pupil Rowan Newton who talked about her experiences studying Theatre Arts at Otago University and as Stage Manager at the Fortune Theatre in Dunedin.  Our thanks to all of the students who performed items, and to Ms Walshe and her team for their organisational expertise.

Principal's Message

Kia Ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

As we begin the final term for 2014 there is a difference in the air of the College following the passing of Mrs Denece Rae during the school holidays. She was on staff at St Kevin's for twenty five years and a true Kevinian. We were honoured to have her family join us for Mass today where we remembered her together as a College.

A number of students and sporting teams competed at national events over the break and I extend my congratulations to Georgia-Kate and Jessica on their recent competition outings, leaving a number of boys teams in the wake of their shooting success. Our Top V Boys Basketball squad also found success during the holidays bringing home a silver medal from the 2014 A Secondary Schools National Championships. Well done to you all.

Senior students should be looking ahead to their end of year NCEA examinations and setting aside regular time for revision and study. There are some excellent study tips in the College student planner and staff are already beginning to hold additional subject tutorials. Students are encouraged to take advantage of every opportunity.

Finally, I thank you all for your patience at this time while our administrative staff work to ensure the continued flow of information home. I would also ask that you keep all those who have lost loved ones in your prayers.

May God bless you all.
Kerry Ryan, ActingPrincipal

Mrs Denece Rae - A True Kevinian

Many of you have had a smooth ride through SKC and don't even know why. Well I will tell you - reports, admissions, roll, timetables, absences, courses, correspondence, software etc etc all these things just happened. Its because of the lady who worked in the office in the library. Mrs Rae enabled all the things that flow underneath our school to work.

Mrs Rae joined the College Family in April 1989, 25 years ago, as a support staff member in the days of Brother Joe Lauren. As her children went off to school, she was coaxed back into the workforce at a time when technology was undergoing rapid and exciting change. The College needed someone to help with the myriad of changes that this brave new world would bring…

Helping in the library, reliving technology classes, moving from manual typewriters to electronic and then to the many word processors of the computer age. She was learning about Operating Systems MS Dos, Windows, WordPerfect and Microsoft Office when many were throwing up their arms in despair. They were all her domain. She was the Queen of Keyboard and the more recently our Network Manager and MUSAC database administrator. She kept up to date with the trends and had the happy knack of being able to reinvent herself as the circumstances changed. Always keen to learn, she had a quick wit and was as sharp as a tack.

Mr Olsen worked with her when he was DP here at SKC and being a self-confessed technology geek it made for a good start. They had plenty of good debates on the direction we should take to keep up with emerging trends. She made sure the College was always at the forefront of technological innovation. She even said to Mr Olsen and to me more recently “Well! Do you want to keep up with things or not! You’ll just have to get the gorse out of your pockets!”

She was never one to shy away from a challenge… and it has kept us in good stead. Not that we always saw eye to eye on every occasion but as you will know, Mrs Rae was of a “determined disposition” and most of you at one time or another will have seen the wisdom of seeing it her way early in proceedings.

Being the Network Manager meant that she had an office in the library. It was not everyone who had the gumption to tackle a first fifteen lock or prop when they were off task in the Library, but it was not a worry for our Mrs Rae. As Deputy Principal there were a number of times that I walked into a packed library that you knew was unnaturally quiet… only to get a report from Mrs Rae with her stern face: “Those lads were being clowns so I’ve just given them a sort out… and they wouldn’t be coming back for seconds if they know what’s good for them”

Many of you may not know but Mrs Rae was no stranger to the classroom and did her fair share of relief work. She enjoyed working in the class and helping students to get to grips with the emerging technology. Her classroom control was a given and her IT skills were second to none. While she was the first to admit she was not a teacher, you could tell that she was quietly pleased with her achievements and proud of the student and staff that she tutored and mentored.

Teacher qualified she may not have been, but coach she certainly was. Sports in general were her passion and netball was top of the list. Mrs Rae coached the A Netball team to success and was formidable in tactics and skills development. Her work on the courts and supporting her grandchildren at rugby, has built an enduring legacy for sport in the College. Her analysis of the weekends sporting roundup and her support for the underdog will be sorely missed.

We talk about our Special Character at the College and sum it up in our FIRE Values – Family, Integrity, Respect and Excellence.

…. you embodied these values and gave it all you had. You continued in service to the College over the last months, above and beyond anything that could be expected in the circumstances, even coming to school in your wheelchair. It sums up your commitment to a place you loved.

I am drawn to the words of The Irish Blessing:
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your fields
And, until we meet again,
May god hold you in the palm of his hand

Mrs Rae /Denece: You are a Kevinian at heart and you are truly one of our “Special Characters”. You will be missed and most definitely not forgotten.

2014 A Secondary Schools National Basketball Championship

The school holidays saw the Top V Boys Basketball squad traveled to Palmerston North to defend their national title at the 2014 A Secondary Schools National Basketball Championships.  Their campaign started with force and a great win against Aquinas 64-61 saw a finals match-up against Kavanagh College.  The national grand final was fiercely contented but the boys, in the spirit of the Special Character of the College, acknowledged a better side going down to Kavanagh 64-56.  Well done boys on this fantastic effort, once again.  And a special congratulations to Hikari Shigenobu and Tiare Barlow who were named in the tournament team, and to Hamish Robertson who despite injury was our highest scorer, making 25 points.

Aiming High In The Holidays

Over 290 Secondary school students competed in the NZ Fish & Game South Island and New Zealand Secondary Schools Clay Target Championships 2014 held in Christchurch 27-29 September, again students from St Kevin’s College were amongst the top performers. Jessica Fraser had an impressive day in the South Island Girls events ending the day with Girls High Over all, 1st in Single Rise and third in points score. In the New Zealand Championships on Sunday Georgia Blair collected a Second Place finish in single rise and this teamed with her results in the points score event Georgia was selected to the South Island Representative team who beat the North island Team 120-115. Jessica was selected to the Fish and Game Regional team who were also successful against their reviles. The Weekend didn’t end there the third day of the event saw 100 Students compete in the South Island and New Zealand Skeet Championships in challenging weather conditions. The duo of Georgia and Jessica were in fine form with Jessica placing 1st and Georgia 3rd in the New Zealand Championships Girls Skeet. The pair finished impressively in 2nd place in the open 2 man team’s event only being beaten by one other boy’s two man team.

Principal's Comment

Kia Ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

As the term comes to a rapid conclusion with examinations and assessment being the focus of the week, I have been reflecting on the achievements of a busy but productive term. Academic, sporting and cultural success has come to be the norm. Our Special Character Review has affirmed the direction that we are heading as a College. This can be summed up in our strongly articulated Values and high expectations. We foster students to use their talents to the best of their ability, for the common good.

With spring enveloping the College grounds, the broader theme of growth and development has echoed in a number of pivotal "future thinking" meetings being held this week.

Hostel redevelopment has been the hot topic of discussion for boarders. Last Friday, Jo Anne Van der Salm wrote to hostel parents indicating that the Trust would be developing a plan to consolidate the hostels onto a single site near Redcastle. This week we have had a series of meetings to explore proposals and craft a plan for our community to give feedback about. Students have had the opportunity to have input and have already given us some valuable insights. We are committed to begin implementation for the 2015 school year.

The second planning stream is "future curriculum". This is being led by the Head of Curriculum, Mr Ryan. We are looking to build on the VPath initiatives of the last two years and add greater diversity of meaningful learning opportunities to retain and engage our Year 12 and 13 students. Examples of these programmes include equestrian studies, trade skills and service sector courses.

The College administration is working hard to be responsive to needs and move with the times. Initiatives such the development of a St Kevin's College App and deployment of the Ultra Fast Broad Band are examples of this proactive approach. I would encourage you to download the app if you have not already done so. It is available on both Google Play and Apple Store as free downloads for your phone.

Looking forward to the start of Term Four, I will be out of school for the first three weeks. Mr Ryan will be in the role of Acting Principal and any urgent issues should be directed to him in the first instance.

Finally, please keep the Fauth and Pope families in your prayers as they grieve the loss of loved ones.

May God bless you all these holidays.
Paul Olsen, Principal
