Kia ora Kevinians and Supporters

Our thoughts this week have been with our rowers competing in the Maadi Cup regatta at Lake Karapiro. Georgia Dyson and Molly Kay made it to the semi finals for Under 16 Girls and are in a B final on Saturday. Reuben Mihaere missed out by 3 seconds making the C final which he won by 9 seconds having been in front from the start. We also spare a thought for our brother school St Bede's at this challenging time - kia kaha.

On Wednesday, it was my pleasure to welcome to the College Br Arthur O'Kane (Christian Brother) and Mr John Pedofsky (past caretaker). These gentlemen talked at assembly about their involvement with the historic Chinaman's Hut near Dansey's Pass. The College uses the Hut as a base for our Duke of Edinburgh programme. Many students have visited it on their Bronze tramp lead by Mr Russell Dixon. It was a pleasure to be able to recount some of the amazing history of the little back country gem. We are very much the trustees of the Chinaman's Hut and we are appreciative of the work put into restoring it by the hardworking Kevinian's of both yesteryear and today. We also acknowledge the access granted by the Bayley family of Otekaieke whose land we pass through on these adventures.

At our 8.30am Professional Development session this Thursday, we had an enthusiastic group of Leo Club members braving the early start to work with staff. The topic under discussion was effective teaching and learning. The students were invited to give a "client perspective" on best practice. My sincere thanks to all those who contributed to improving our current practice.

May God bless you all this Lenten season

Taking A Stand With Father Wayne

This week the four College Houses used their annual chalk mural challenge to stand up in support of Father Wayne and retired Rev Bernard Wilkinson in their bid to keep legal highs out of the shops in our local community.  It was a great display of strong messages with vibrant chalk colours and even a 3D effect from Treacy House.  Our guests were impressed with all of the murals and the generous prize offered by Father Wayne was split between the Houses and the House Captains agreed that it would be passed on to charity.  Well done everyone.

Mr Ryan Takes One For The Team

Today was the day when Mr Ryan took one for the Relay For Life team with the last major fundraiser before the event this weekend.  A fantastic $400 was raised ($160 of that coming from the sale of pies and balloons) and this will be split between the three teams from the College.  Thank you Mr Ryan for being such an amazing sport, even when Ms Walshe bought and threw the first pie.  A special thanks also to Placemakers and North End New World for their support and donations.

National TeenAg Recognition

Y13 student Brittany Caldwell has been given the privilege of being the Aorangi Representative on the inaugural National TeenAg Committee, which has been established to promote and offer assistance and advice to TeenAg clubs in schools across the country.  Working closely with the Regional Field Officers, the committee hope to strengthen relationships between the regions and also promote careers and industry within the farming sector.  Brittany was selected by the Aorangi Field Officer and traveled to Christchurch recently for a leadership day and to meet the six other committee members.  The day was also attended by the Chairman and the CEO of the NZ Young Farmers.  Congratulations Brittany on this well deserved recognition.

Brittany and the TeenAg teams traveling to Taupo for the National Finals will be selling an Easter Raffle next Thursday 2nd April at the North End New World.  Please support them.  Thank you!

Y11 Retreat

The Y11 Retreat took place at the Moeraki Marae last Friday.  Students enjoyed warm and sunny conditions on their journey to acquire knowledge of Kawa, Tikanga and Maori Spirituality.  Marae facilitators Nola and Patrick Tipa engaged students in group reflections and feedback sessions inside the meeting house.  They also took them on a walk to view ancestral burial grounds overlooking the original beach settlement.  Prior to departing the students performed a rousing Haka before Mr and Mrs Tipa to show their appreciation of the teachings they had given them on this Retreat.

Congratulations to the Home & School team for organising a very successful quiz evening on Monday night. Thank you to all those who coordinated teams and purchased raffles. The fundraiser was well attended and has netted over $1000.

This week the New Zealand Qualifications Authority conducted their three yearly school audit. This is a detailed review of all our assessment systems and I am pleased to report that we have received and excellent report card. Thank you to Mrs Potter and Mr Ryan who have oversight in these areas and manage very effectively a complex network of procedures.

This morning I was honoured to attended the annual Maadi Breakfast. This occasion is a show of support for our local rowers who are heading off to Lake Karapiro for the Maadi Cup week. Molly Kay, Georgia Dyson, and Reuben Mihaere are pictured with the Maadi tops they recieved for the occasion. We wish them and all our local rowers every success.
We are expecting the Caregiver's portal to have the Attitude to Learning (fortnightly indicators) functioning this weekend. If you are having trouble getting into the portal, feel free to ring the school office for advice. Musac do recommend that you use "Google Chrome" as your internet browser and the login email needs to be the one we hold in our school records. You will soon also be able to use this portal to pay accounts on-line.

May God bless you in this Lenten season

Special Assessment Conditions

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority has a very formal process for approving special conditions (SAC) for NCEA assessment. It is also has very detailed rules around how the SAC assistance is delivered. It does not however fund the time required for the reader/writers required to meet many of these conditions. NZQA provides reader/writers for the end of year external examination which it runs, but does not provide them for the mock exams at school which are the backup plan if a student is sick on the examination day.

With the number of students getting SAC assistance, increasing from less than 1% to more 15% in some classes, we have found ourselves unable to provide the level of voluntary assistance required in examination settings. To be fair and transparent with the process we charge $30 per hour when we have to employ a reader/writer for key external assessments such as mock exams.
As always, if this would cause financial hardship, application should be made to the principal for financial assistance.

There are some times when internal assessments also need support, however as a College we are working to reduce the need for reader/writers. To help further support students, the school has software that enables SAC students to have their assessment tasks read to them via computer.  The students involved simply require a basic set of ear phones, a pen-drive and use of their own or school laptop or PC. This helps with the process in a seamless way and allows the student to remain within the class throughout the assessment as opposed to being segregated to an alternative venue.

We are trying to be as inclusive as possible, while keeping the cost to a minimum for caregivers.

Duke Of Edinburgh And Chinaman's Hut

Last weekend a small group of, students completing the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award traveled to Dansey's Pass to set out on our 24 hr adventurous journey to Chinaman's hut. There were two groups of us.  A group with two boys (Angus and Tom) and us three girls (Katie,Amy and Ami) doing our Bronze level, there was also another group of girls (Sydney, Georgia and Tiana) completing their Gold level practice tramp along with Mr Dixon and Mr Farrell.

We left the school at about four o’clock and traveled with Mr Farrell in the school’s pocket rocket hostel van with Mr Dixon in his Hilux taking Georgia, Sydney and Tiana. It was the moment we had been waiting for after weeks of anticipation and planning.

After a long drive on a winding road we arrived at the start of the Chinaman's hut tramp on Otekaieke Station.

We then had to make sure we had gathered our tents, billys, gas and cookers that we would need in order to survive the night off Mr Dixon. We then began the hour and a bit long tramp. The tramp included many crossings of the river so we had to be prepared to get wet feet more than once.

When we had made the tramp up to the hut we put up our tent and began cooking our tea. Then finally it was time to sit down and have a rest and enjoy our tea under a rather overcast and rain threatening sky.Thankfully it didn’t come to much more than light drizzle until we needed to walk back to our tent after a visit to the others inside the hut. It was then time to go to bed.

The next day we were up and ready for a walk to the top of the valley to see a waterfall. Luckily for us we could leave our tramping packs with the tents back at the hut while we were gone.

After another hour tramp we got to the waterfall and it was awesome, although the deep pool of icy water below was a bit chilling. After taking some photos we made our way back to the hut to get some lunch. Heading back we found a cool cave like nook in the rock which was also another photo opportunity.

It was then time to pack up and put on our packs for the grueling walk back which proved to be a lot easier than on the way there. It was now all downhill!

When we finally made it back to the vehicles it was a relief to get our packs off our shoulders and know we didn't have to carry them any further.

The tramp was heaps of fun with lots of laughs and good times to be remembered.

Aoraki Secondary Schools Swimming

Our Aoraki Swim Team hit the water in Timaru last week at the Aoraki Secondary Schools Swimming for 2015.  Congratulations to Hannah Cunningham, Jayde Pickworth and Jaxson McDonald-Piner on some great results.  Jayde picked up a 3rd and a 2nd in the Girls 15 & Over 50m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke events, while Jaxson scored two 1st placings, a 2nd and a 3rd in the Boys U14 section.  He also broke not one, but two records at the meet in the 50m Freestyle (26.15) and the 50m Butterfly (29.51).  Hannah secured a 7th and two 6th placings in her first regional swim meet for the College.  Well done!

Life Education Trust

Max Stewart, Thomas Pickles and Matthew Cullimore spent time with Harold from the Life Education Trust at their fundraising BBQ on Saturday, helping to raise awareness and the profile of the work that the Life Education Trust does within the North Otago region.

The Trust works closely with schools across the community providing children with the knowledge to make informed choices about their health, to respect others and helps them to learn to appreciate their uniqueness.  Well done boys for getting involved with this very important cause.

Head Of The Harbour Regatta

There were impressive performances at the Otago Head of the Harbour Regatta for the SKC Rowing Youth Development Team and Competitive Squad on Saturday.  Fran Yanzick was the pick of the novices winning the U18 Novice Single before teaming up with Julia Fauth to take 3rd in the U18 Double.  SKC showed great versatility in the boys U18 Quad and the Four with 4th placings in both events for Charlie Wallis, Julia Fauth, Adam SewHoy and Kalas Taukamo - Tarras Weir (cox).  Charlie took out 2nd in the U18 Single, with Adam and Kalas finishing 4th in the U16 Double.  A special treat was Charlie and Julia combining for the U18 Pair event showing great style and timing.  Our YDT athletes Jack Souness, Riley McKeown, Ben SewHoy and Nicholas Plieger - Tarras Weir (cox) improved upon the earlier Otago Regatta to finish 3rd in the Junior Boys Four and 6th in the Quad.  Junior Doubles combination Jack and Riley gaining 5th, and Ben and Nicholas taking 6th place rounded out a very enjoyable and successful outing.  Well done to everyone!

On Monday after school the Whitestone Learning and Change Network (LCN) gathered in our library.  St Joseph's, Weston and Papakaio schools are foundation members and were joined by Ardgowan and Totara. The focus of the gathering was to explore how we can improve the transition from primary to secondary school. Thank you to our Y10 students who shared their thoughts with the 60 participants.

This weekend the College will have a presence at the Wanaka Show. If you are attending the event, please call in at our tent and catch up with Mr Fowler.

I am currently in Nelson with the Wataki District Schools Pipeband who are competing at the nationals.  St Kevin's has a strong contingent of both pipers and drummers amongst our ranks. Next week we will be offering the opportunity for new learners to join our tuition program. If you know of anyone who would like to learn, have them leave their contact details at the College Office. Lessons start next Wednesday, 7 pm at the Waitaki Boys music room.

South Island Secondary School Rowing

"Silver & Bronze” Medals for SKC athletes who attended this weekends South Island Secondary Schools Regatta held at Lake Ruataniwha Twizel. We completed in 14 events and secured 5 A finals and 3 B finals. Due to strong winds on the Sunday the finals were not able to be raced and the regatta organisers then awarded medals based on the times from the heats. This meant that SKC gained the following South Island results:
Silver Adam Sew Hoy & Reuben Mihaere Boys Under 18 Lightweight Double
Bronze Georgia Dyson & Molly Kay Girls Under 16 Double
4th Reuben Mihaere Boys Under 16 Single
4th Adam Sew Hoy & Kalas Taukamo Boys Under 16 Double
5th Sydney Telfer & Molly Kay Girls Under 18 Double
B Finals were Sydney Telfer Girls Under 18 Single,  Charlie Wallis Boys Under 17 Single.  Charlie Wallis & Reuben Mihaere Boys Under 17 Double.

All athletes that attended the regatta showed marked improvements from previous regattas and were happy to have represented the College at this elite level of competition. Of special note was the gutsy performance in the Under 15 Girls Double by Katie McKeown and Abbey Mabon holding off Marlborough Girls in their heat race on the Saturday.  Stew Mitchell, having relocated to Nelson, followed the SKC athletes progress and was thrilled to see all of the athletes achieving their own personal milestones at this regatta.

We look forward now to “Head of the Harbour” Regatta this weekend on Saturday where most of the SKC Competitive Squad and the Youth Development Squad will be representing the College and wish Georgia Dyson, Molly Kay and Reuben Mihaere all the best in their final preparation for MAADI CUP 2015 to be held in Cambridge later this month.

Also selected for teams are past pupils Tiana Mihaere (U19), and Hannah Mihaere and Bethany Robertson (Premier).  Well done to you all!

A brave group of intrepid trampers tackled the Ahuriri Valley in the weekend for their Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition.  And whilst the weather may have played havoc with their plans, bringing them home a day early, it was marked a success for the enjoyment factor alone.  They plan to complete the second half of their expedition soon.

Our SKC rowers have been hard at work training for the South Island Secondary Schools Regatta which will be held this weekend at Lake Ruataniwha.  Our athletes will be competing in 14 events and for most this regatta will signal the end of their season.  For a few athletes this is the last sort out before Maadi Cup (Nationals) which are being held at the end of the month at Lake Kirapiro.  We wish them all the very best for the upcoming weekend and offer up prayers for good weather and racing conditions.
