Dux of the College for 2018 was Levi Sherman

Congratulations to all of our 2018 Graduates and Senior Prizegiving winners. The premier awards were presented to Sarah Dodds who is this year's Proxime Accessit to the Dux and Levi Sherman, winner of the McKone Cup and the 2018 Dux of St Kevin's College.

A Hat for All Seasons

Morning tea in the staffroom had a distinctive flavour with creative hats being the attire.

 Congratulations to Mrs Watt and Mr Dixon who our won best hat and story awards. 

Whitestone Cheese Visit

Today our English language learners went on a trip to Whitestone Cheese, here in Oamaru.
Tour guide Flora told us about the factory, cheese making and after watching a short video, we went into the factory to see the cheeses being made. All of us were wearing yellow high visibility vests, which seemed very appropriate. After this, we had a chance to taste different cheeses, varying from mild to sharp. Some of the students shuddered, others loved it. It was a fun learning experience about something so very Kiwi as cheese. Thank you to Mrs Foster and Mrs De Paauw for organising our trip.

Graduates Dinner

Dear Whanau of Graduating Students

Congratulations, this evening your student will officially graduate from St Kevin’s College.

Our graduates traditionally meet at the end of the examination season for what has come to be known as the Graduates Dinner. As a College, we help the students to organise this post-school event and support them to arrange a guest speaker for an evening of celebration.

The Head Boy and Head Girl have asked me to publicise this year's event and pass on the following invitation:

On behalf of the graduating class of 2018, Joel and Rebecca warmly invite whanau to join with us to celebrate our graduation. 

The dinner will take place on Saturday, December 1st. It will start at 6pm.

It will be held at the Brydone Hotel which has the following address:  115 Thames Street, Oamaru.

Tickets can be purchased at the school office on behalf of the graduates. The cost is $45 per person.

Tickets need to be purchased by Friday 23rd November (last day for sales as numbers will need to be confirmed)

The dress for the Dinner is Semi-formal.

We wish our graduating students and whanau all the very best for the evening.

Aoraki Secondary Schools Sports Awards

Last evening the 20th Aoraki Secondary Schools Sports Awards were held in Timaru. Four tables of students and supporters enjoyed a great evening of inspiring achievements.

Congratulations to Caitlin Middlemiss who is Gymsport Female of the year and Clark Ewing who is Trapshooting Male of the year.

The SKC students who received NZ Honours were:

Principal's Comment

Kia ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

Thank you to everyone who helped with and contributed to Zara's funeral service on Monday. Our College Chapel was packed with family and friends, paying tribute to and celebrating her life. It was an opportunity to try to reconcile the jumble of thoughts, feelings and emotions that pour out at a time of tragic loss.

Staff have walked beside our students as they come to terms with their grief and it is a mark of our faith that we can support each other so genuinely in the most difficult of times. We have been humbled by the outpouring of support from our local community and others, including schools, from all over the country. We wish to publicly thank everyone who has emailed, sent cards of support or contributed to our staff welfare in so many ways. Your actions have been a tangible blessing for which we are truly grateful.

As this is the last week for seniors, we have had a number of events celebrating achievements. These include the Cuban Photographic Exhibition, Presentation of Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards and yesterdays Leaver's Assembly. We also had a visit from Br Bernard Gartland, the College Proprietor on Tuesday. We look forward to celebrating our successes more formally at our Graduation Mass and Prizegiving Ceremony 7pm on Monday evening.

Leaver's Assembly

Thursday's assembly included a tribute to our senior Leaver's. The traditional before and after shots of our seniors in year 9 and 13, was well received. Staff and students applauded the leavers as they left the auditorium at the end of the assembly. Outside the leavers performed a passionate haka of thanks to the school.

Peter Brophy's Visit

On Thursday, we were honoured to welcome back to the College past pupil Mr Peter Brophy. Peter presented a copy of his biography "Gold Rhythms" to the College library. 

Peter visited the Stables which served as the classroom block when he attended the College, 1947-50.

His book included some historical pictures of the College. Pictured is a poolside shot capturing a young Br Graham Donaldson amongst others.

Kinetic Sculpture

Year 13 materials technology student, Levi Sherman, has completed his Kinetic Scupture project.
The computer controlled moveable panels were fabricated using a 3D printer and harness some clever electronics to coordinate the movement.

Cuban Photographic Exhibition

On Wednesday the College hosted the Cuban ambassador to New Zealand, Mr Mario Alzugaray, together with his wife Elizabeth and son Mauricio. Ambassador Alzugaray was welcomed to our assembly by Mayor Gary Kircher and Mr Olsen.  Anna Craig shared some images of their trip to Cuba in April and spoke eloquently about the many places visited and people the travellers had the privilege of meeting. Mr Alzugary addressed our students and highlighted the commonality of the people of our two countries. He shared some thoughts about his time in New Zealand and encouraged students to travel to his country. 

Later, the ambassador along with the mayor officially opened the exhibition at the Redcastle. 

 The ambassador presented to our students a painting for the College collection.
