A big congratulations to Liam Direen who has been selected in Squash New Zealand's 2020 Elite Junior Squad.

The squad will give Liam an introduction to High Performance environments and international competition. It is for athletes demonstrating potential for future high performance involvement, tracking towards national team representation in 1-3 years’ time.

Maori Cultural Tourism Camp at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island

During the recent holidays Katarina Green, Tayla McGregor- Hoffman, Levi Kelly and Joel Klenner, accompanied by Mrs Eatherley and Mrs Hesselin, attended a Maori Cultural Tourism Camp at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island.

The students had an immersion experience where they were taught Tikanga (customs and protocols) Te Reo (language relating to greetings and place names) Manaakitanga (hospitality) and Whanaungatanga (kinship and working together).

Between fun activities like waka ama, flax weaving, kapa haka, touring the island and preparing a hangi, students worked hard to complete the Gateway assessments, that contribute to their NCEA achievement.

The camp was a very uplifting experience for all involved and thanks must go to the tutors and other helpers at the marae as well as the staff of Service IQ.

Anne Frank Exhibition

Last week we had some Year 10-12 students head to Dunedin for the Anne Frank exhibition

Events of her life were shown on the walls, and there were guides there to help students with their questions.

Our 34 students travelled home afterwards with a heightened awareness of these events, giving them a better understanding of a persons view if they are victims in such an event.

Thank you to all those who helped with the trip.

Principal's Comment

Kia ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

Welcome back to the final term of the College year. Spring blossom and unsettled weather are always good indicators that we are in the final weeks for seniors. As I am catching up with details following my sabbatical, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Ryan and the management team for stepping up in my absence. I have been following developments and congratulate the College on an outstanding term of engagement and achievement.

I was particularly pleased to share in the sporting journeys of students over the holidays. We will be acknowledging these, in particular, the basketball and trapshooting teams results in the coming weeks.
My personal congratulations to all our sporting teams and coaches for a superb winter season.

On a special character note, during the holidays a group of staff lead by Mr Mullally attended a gathering of Dominican educators in Invercargill. The focus was on integrating the Dominican tradition into a curriculum in a modern and relevant way for 21st C learners. The picture below shows the warm welcome we and our local Dominican Sisters received at the Bluff Marae.
Mr Mullally also took a group of students to the Edmund Rice Street Retreat in Christchurch. Both of these events deepen our connection to our Catholic charisms.

Finally, as we settle in for the last weeks for seniors, I encourage students and whanau to make a plan to maximise the opportunities available through tutorials and revision as we head to external examinations.

Annual Street Retreat 2019

During the Term 3 holidays six Year 12 students attended the 3 day Edmund Rice Network 'Annual Street Retreat', at St Thomas of Canterbury College in Christchurch with Mr Mullally and Mr Thompson.

This was an opportunity for them to join with 28 other fellow ERN students and gain valuable insights into injustice, physical and mental trauma rehabilitation, community outreach service organisations, prison incarceration and Police Youth Aid work.

Their involvement and exposure to various social issues associated with poverty and injustice gave them awareness and understanding to the issues that many people face on a day to day basis in our society.

ShakeOut 2019

All students and staff participated in the nationwide ShakeOut this afternoon! The event helps keep students and staff aware of safety procedures if an earthquake or tsunami should occur.

Thank you to everyone for taking part!
