Year 13 Retreat 2020

Last month the Year 13 students attended an onsite Retreat run by the CYT (Christchurch Youth Team), a  Mission team from the Christchurch Diocese.

The theme was "Identity" and provided our senior students with an opportunity to support their faith development and understandings about Jesus' practical teachings. Students each received a reflection booklet in which they could record their thoughts as the day's activities unfolded.

The Retreat used the Chapel, Auditorium and sunny outside venues and students reported that they enjoyed the interactions with the Youth Team.

Annual Street Retreat 2019

During the Term 3 holidays six Year 12 students attended the 3 day Edmund Rice Network 'Annual Street Retreat', at St Thomas of Canterbury College in Christchurch with Mr Mullally and Mr Thompson.

This was an opportunity for them to join with 28 other fellow ERN students and gain valuable insights into injustice, physical and mental trauma rehabilitation, community outreach service organisations, prison incarceration and Police Youth Aid work.

Their involvement and exposure to various social issues associated with poverty and injustice gave them awareness and understanding to the issues that many people face on a day to day basis in our society.

Retreat Week

Last week was Retreat Week here at St Kevin's College! Each year group attended a one day programme, led by the Christchurch Diocese Youth Mission Team, based out of our Chapel. The team leaders took students through a series of different activities, aimed at discovering Christ in their world.

We really enjoyed the Catholic Youth Ministries' approach to sharing contemporary Gospel focused messages, like how we can 'be the change' we want to see in the world. Thank you to everyone from the team for running these awesome sessions!

Edmund Rice Leadership Camp

Last weekend Mr Mullally accompanied the Top Six as they traveled to Auckland for the Edmund Rice Leadership Camp.  This Camp is held each year and school leaders from Edmund Rice schools from around the country gather together to hone their leadership skills and share thoughts and ideas on the year ahead.  This year they were great with a surprise when they arrived.... they were greeted by Mark Whittet and GypsyMae Harihona-Harrison who had been invited as guest student leaders!

Year 10 Camp

Our Y10 students are preparing for their upcoming Camp and Retreat which will be on during the last week of term.  This is always an extremely enjoyable experience for students and is often reflected on as one of the highlights of their time at St Kevin's.

The four days at camp are spent in the Hopkin's Valley area near Twizel.  There are three camps, each with a particular focus, and students rotate around the camps to get a day at each.

Lake Middleton is a great spot for a variety of activities on offer.  Students enjoy water skiing/biscuiting, kayaking, swimming and mountain biking, as well as orienteering and fun group activities.  Huxley Lodge is where we have our Retreat and it's focus is on the students, their peers and has an emphasis on small group challenges to create a positive and reflective atmosphere.  Temple Stream is a tent over-nighter where students learn bushcraft skills like river-crossing and first aid, as well as enjoying the amazing natural environment of the area on short day tramps.

Y10 Camp is an important feature on our College calendar and has been run very successfully for many years.  The activities are designed to challenge students and build their confidence in an environment that is supportive and ensures an enjoyable experience.  A team of Y12 students join camp staff as helpers and it's little wonder that there is always an influx of applications thanks to great memories from their time as a "Y10 Camper".

Y11 Retreat

The Y11 Retreat took place at the Moeraki Marae last Friday.  Students enjoyed warm and sunny conditions on their journey to acquire knowledge of Kawa, Tikanga and Maori Spirituality.  Marae facilitators Nola and Patrick Tipa engaged students in group reflections and feedback sessions inside the meeting house.  They also took them on a walk to view ancestral burial grounds overlooking the original beach settlement.  Prior to departing the students performed a rousing Haka before Mr and Mrs Tipa to show their appreciation of the teachings they had given them on this Retreat.
