Catholic Schools Tournament Day One

The week began with one of the major sporting events on our College calendar, the Senior Catholic Schools Tournament.  With teams from Verdon College, St Peter's College, Kavanagh College and Roncalli College joining us in Oamaru this year, it was a huge undertaking for SKC.  Our sincerest thanks to all of the staff and volunteers who worked so hard over the course of two days.  Congratulations to tournament winners Roncalli College and well done to our SKC sports teams on joint second place.

Sweet Science

Who knew science could be so sweet! 10K have been making models of DNA out of lollies. They have to demonstrate how the DNA model carries the genetic code as well as the double helix shape. Nice work!

Principal's Comment

Kia ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

Employment pathways have been a focus in the College this week. Year 10 have been out in our community job shadowing and our Year 11 Agriculture students have visited local business who are supporting the agricultural sector. I accompanied the Year 11 students and came away with a clearer understanding of the range and depth of employment opportunities available locally. Thank you to Mrs Eatherley and the Primary Industry Training Organisation for supporting this initiative.

Last weekend Mrs Anne Fleet celebrated 30 years of employment at the College Hostel kitchen. On Tuesday we acknowledged Anne's contribution to the College with a presentation in the dining room. Pictured below with Anne are Compass Group manager Tracy Siggelko and our Director of Boarding and Matrons.

As this is the final blog for the term, I would like to thank in advance everyone who is helping with this weekend's Catholic Secondary Sports Tournament and wish you a happy Easter.

May God bless you
Paul Olsen, Principal

Well Done Jacob

At the end of Mass today, Mr Olsen presented Jacob Taukamo with a certificate to recognise his fantastic efforts at the recent Aoraki Athletics Competition.  Jacob competed in the AWD division and placed 4th in the Shot Put and 5th in the 100m.  Well done Jacob!

Y11 Agriculture Out And About

On Tuesday our Y11 Ag students had the opportunity to visit a number of local primary sector businesses and see first hand the growth and ongoing potential in this exciting industry!  Oamaru is a hub for the local farming community but innovations are also seeing an increased presence on national and international markets.  A big thank you to Pivotal, Water Force, Te Pari, Farm Source, Ravensdown and Gordon Handy for giving your time to speak with our students and show them about.

Strong Aoarki Swim Team

The biggest swim team in years is looking forward to competing at Aoraki Championships on the 12th of April in Ashburton. Jaxson holds three records for the area and has his sights set on a few more. Penny is defending her 'Best Female Junior' trophy; and is determined to keep it, especially against her younger sister. The junior female relay team is shaping up as a major threat to other bigger schools.   The whole team have individual goals and Personal Bests to achieve. Our thanks go out to the super-mums Erena Smart and Jan Keeling who are driving cars on the big day, and then spending the whole day timing swimmers.
