Mihi Whakatau 2021
Yesterday we welcomed our new Year 9 students and Staff to the College with a mihi whakatau. Thank you to Ben Kay for leading the haka and setting a fine example to our new Year 9 students.

This year we welcome new staff Mr Martin Brown (MTEC), Mrs Jen Herbst (Religious Studies and COL), and Ms Johanna Jiang (Mandarin). We also welcome back Mrs Hayley Ambler who is taking senior Biology classes.

Year 10 Maori
Earlier this month Year 10 Maori had a hands on class with tools, musical instruments a drill, backpack, sandals and also building an eel drying rack!

Confuscius Classroom Awards
Last week we celebrated our Confuscius Classroom awards.
Confucius Classrooms are school-based hubs for Chinese teaching and learning and is a joint project with the Confucius Institute from Canterbury University.
Well done to all for being awarded Confuscius Classroom of the year! Students were also awarded ''Spark Cards'' for doing something that represents our FIRE values.
Thank you to Miss Betty Zeng and Miss Joy Guo our Mandarin teachers for all their hard work for our students.

Cook Islands Language Week 2020
🌺 Kia Orāna! 🌺
This past week has been Cook Islands Maori Language Week 2020 (2-8 August).
This years theme was "Kia pūāvai tō tātou Reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani i Aotearoa" which in English means "That the Cook Islands Māori language may blossom throughout New Zealand."
Here we have Year 13 student Leonard (Lenny) Varu featuring in this short video greeting us and sharing his love for corned beef!
Lenny comes from Arorangi in the Cook Islands and joined us at St Kevin's College last year. Lenny has fitted in well at both school and hostel life, and is a crowd favourite amonst his peers and teachers. Lenny is also a talented rugby player and is in the school 1st XV.

Confucius Classroom Chinese Dinner.
Last Friday was the Confucius Classroom Chinese dinner.
Confucius Classroom at St Kevin's College invited students from St Joseph's and St Kevin's College because they obtained excellence this year. Mr Paul Olsen made a welcome speech and a meal was enjoyed by all.
Many many thanks to the teachers and Peter Lee the head of Oamaru Chinese Association for their support and efforts in all Chinese Programmes.

Maori Cultural Tourism Camp at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island
During the recent holidays Katarina Green, Tayla McGregor- Hoffman, Levi Kelly and Joel Klenner, accompanied by Mrs Eatherley and Mrs Hesselin, attended a Maori Cultural Tourism Camp at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island.
The students had an immersion experience where they were taught Tikanga (customs and protocols) Te Reo (language relating to greetings and place names) Manaakitanga (hospitality) and Whanaungatanga (kinship and working together).
Between fun activities like waka ama, flax weaving, kapa haka, touring the island and preparing a hangi, students worked hard to complete the Gateway assessments, that contribute to their NCEA achievement.
The camp was a very uplifting experience for all involved and thanks must go to the tutors and other helpers at the marae as well as the staff of Service IQ.

Mid-Autumn China Night
On Tuesday night we had 70 people from St Kevin's College, St Joseph's and the community attend our Mid-Autumn China Night.
We had dances, singing, traditional Chinese garb and cultural activities and games. Traditional Chinese food was also provided.
Thank you to everyone that came along to celebrate Chinese culture. A big thank you to all those that were involved in the organisation of the event.

Otago Polyfest 2019
Our Pasifika group travelled to Dunedin yesterday to take part in the Otago Polyfest 2019.
We had 24 performers and musicians involved and they looked stunning in their bright blue which matched their energetic performance.
Well done to everyone who took part. A big thank you to Mrs Tina Dooley, Mr Sam Tatupu and April for accompanying the group. April also took the awesome photos!
A big shout out to Talanoa Palu for sewing many of the costumes at the 11th hour and Veronica Kauapa for her outstanding leadership. Also to members of Veronica's family who helped with the choreography.

Chinese Moon Festival Evening
Join us for a night of traditional Chinese culture between 7-8pm next Tuesday evening, 17th September.
The evening will include Chinese games, catwalk (Chinese clothes) and food at the end (in the Food Tech room).

2019 Singing Festival
The 2019 Singing Festival was held last Thursday night and like always it was another fantastic display of talent by our students.
A big thanks to our Judging Panel for the evening - Olivia Gonzales (Music Teacher WGHS), Simran Sadler (WGHS Student) and Kaleb Hayes (WBHS Student). A big thank you to Mrs Foster for her organisational expertise, the Audition Judges, College staff, our House Captains and the night's techie Isaac Steel.

2019 Kaupapa Maori Festival "Hui Ako"
Yesterday St Kevin's College performed at the 2019 Kaupapa Maori Festival "Hui Ako" at the Oamaru Opera House
Hui Ako, means "to gather and learn together" and it was great to see a wide range of performances across our North Otago schools.
In our Roopu we had 40 performers made up of a choir and 12 soldiers, representing the Maori Battalion. We performed 3 Waiata, the school Haka and the Ka Mate Haka. Check out the video posted earlier for the full performance!
Congratulations to Jerome Misiloi and Serena O'Brien who were recognised for showing leadership within the group.

FieFia Night 2019
Looking back to Fiefia Night last Thursday at the Rec Centre. It was great to see the cluster of schools whose Pasifika communities are so active and contribute so highly to Oamaru.
There was a lovely performance by our Pasifika group and congratulations to our well deserved Excellence Community Award recipients Veronica Kauapa and Leonard Varu.
Thanks to everyone who made this event happen, and our own Tina Dooley for the wonderful work she does with our students.
