Class Act 2020

A big congratulations to our head students Annie Metcalfe and Alex Houston who have been named as our Class Act recipients for 2020.

Class Act recognises success of our region’s senior secondary school students across academic, cultural and sporting pursuits.

All Class Act recipients will be offered a University of Otago Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship in recognition of their success.

Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awarded to Joel Kunnethedan

A big congratulations to Joel Kunnethedan who has completed his Gold Duke of Edinburgh!

Joel committed to the following activities to complete his third and final award:

- Skills: Engineering

- Physical Recreation: Squash

- Voluntary Service: an NCO at our local Air Training Corps & SKC LEOS Club.

- Adventurous Journey: Tramp with Mr Dixon, and ATC Tramps

- Residential Project: New Zealand Cadet Forces Leadership course at Burnham Military Camp

Confucius Classroom Chinese Dinner.

Last Friday was the Confucius Classroom Chinese dinner.

Confucius Classroom at St Kevin's College invited students from St Joseph's and St Kevin's College because they obtained excellence this year. Mr Paul Olsen made a welcome speech and a meal was enjoyed by all.

Many many thanks to the teachers and Peter Lee the head of Oamaru Chinese Association for their support and efforts in all Chinese Programmes.

St Patrick's Basilica 125th Anniversary

Last Friday 8th November SKC Junior school students bused into the St Patrick's Basilica to join with St Joseph's Primary school in a special Mass to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Basilica's opening.

The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Michael Dooley with Chaplain Fr Wayne Healey. Students from both schools combined to share in the congregational Mass ministry's as well as combining choirs.

For a number of students it was their first visit inside the historic Basilica and a chance to see its impressive Oamaru stone architecture up close.

St Kevin's College Senior Graduation Mass & Prizegiving 2019

What a special evening at the College last night as we joined friends and family, and celebrated our Year 13 Graduates and academic, cultural and sporting excellence at St Kevin’s College for 2019.

Scholarship certificates were presented to Serena O’Brien, Ray Meech, Faraz Hussain and Rata McMullan for their success in gaining university or Polytechnic scholarships for study next year.

Our Premier Cultural Awards went to Serena O'Brien and Jonte Kydd-Law, and Sporting Blues were presented to Christian Baillie (Football), Liam Direen (Squash), Clark Ewing (Trapshooting) and Corbyn Hocken (Trapshooting).

Congratulations to all of the prizewinners and in particular Faraz Hussain who is this year's Proxime Accessit to the Dux and Rata McMullan, Dux of the College for 2019.

The graduation dinner for Year 13 will be held on Saturday 30th November at 6pm at the Brydone Hotel

Tickets are $50 and there are 130 tickets available. They will be sold on a first in and first serve basis, with a maximum of 2 additional per student.

Jocelyn Fellowes Achieves Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award

Congratulations to Year 11 student Jocelyn Fellowes who was presented with her Silver Duke of Edinburgh award at assembly today.

Young New Zealanders who attain Silver have invested a minimum of six months to achieve this Award. The Award involves giving service to the community, developing new skills, a commitment to physical well-being, and the training, planning and undertaking of a journey or exploration in the outdoors.

Jocelyn invested in the following areas for her award:

Sporting excellence was highlighted last night with the 2019 Celebration of Sport Awards evening. We were delighted to have so many friends and families join us for the occasion. There was a new award presented in the Rugby section- the Best Back for the 1st XV will now have a new cup, the Russell Dixon Cup. Mr Dixon is retiring from school at the end of the term. He has been an integral part of the rugby family at SKC, having played for the 1st XV during his time at school, and coached various teams for the past 32 years. We gave a special thank you for his contribution to the school and the rugby club. 

  A huge thank you to Nic Plieger who was our MC for the evening, and to Mrs Plunkett for these great photos. Thank you to Mr Smith and all the other helpers on a great night.

St Kevin's College Ownership Changes Hands

After 92 years as proprietor of St Kevin’s College, the Christian Brothers have transferred ownership to Bishop Michael Dooley and the Diocese of Dunedin.

On Monday we welcomed our guests alongside the College to honour the change of ownership. A big thank you to Bishop Michael for the smooth transition and officiating the ritual handover ceremony.

Otago Polyfest 2019

Our Pasifika group travelled to Dunedin yesterday to take part in the Otago Polyfest 2019.

We had 24 performers and musicians involved and they looked stunning in their bright blue which matched their energetic performance.

Well done to everyone who took part. A big thank you to Mrs Tina Dooley, Mr Sam Tatupu and April for accompanying the group. April also took the awesome photos!

A big shout out to Talanoa Palu for sewing many of the costumes at the 11th hour and Veronica Kauapa for her outstanding leadership. Also to members of Veronica's family who helped with the choreography.

We also welcomed back the 1969 St Kevin's College rugby team for their 50 year reunion, which features our very own Mr Russell Dixon.





Captain Peter Reichwein spoke about life at the college in their time, and their match against Waitaki Boys in their interschool, which SKC won 9-0. Despite being 50 years ago, he could recall exactly how the match happened!



The captains of our sports teams also carried out the pounamu blessing, to bless all of our teams who have competed, or are yet to compete in Waitaki Week.
