Past Pupil Hamish Robertson- Assistant Coach Otago Nuggets

Congratulations to past pupil Hamish Robertson who has been named as assistant coach alongside Suzy Bates for the Otago Nuggets this season.

 
Hamish played an important role in game analysis for the Nuggets last season, and despite being a very capable squad member, made the decision to focus on his coaching career this season.

NZ Olympic Track Cycling Selection- Holly Edmonston

A big congratulations to past pupil Holly Edmonston for her selection in the NZ Olympic Track Cycling team for next year's Tokyo Olympics.

A fantastic achievement and recognition of the hard work and sacrifices you have made. All the best!

Neill Ridley- Past Pupil

A write up about past pupil Neill Ridley, a well-known person in the horse racing fraternity. Neill, 67, who had cancer, died peacefully at his home last Friday, 13 days after he had his last two starters from his Riccarton stable.

Neill’s funeral was held at Sockburn Church in Christchurch last Friday, at which a large number of people were present, including a significant number of ex-students of St Kevin’s College.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Neill’s family and friends at this time.

Holly Edmonston Returns!

Towards the end of last term we had past pupil Holly Edmonston visit our High Performance classes.

Holly spoke about her experiences at school, where she grew up, and how she got into cycling. She shared with the students the places she has travelled and what it takes to be in a High-Performance environment.

It was evident Holly is very driven, as she explained the sacrifices she has made and that since leaving school, all she has wanted to do was represent NZ at the Olympics.

Such a fantastic role model, and an awesome opportunity for our students.

Past Pupil Jack Andrew Included in 2020 Otago Nuggets Roster

A big congratulations to past pupil Jack Andrew who has been included in the 2020 Fluid Recruitment Otago Nuggets roster who will compete in the Sal's NBL Showdown in Auckland.

Past Pupil Fiona Watson Shares Expertise

Last Tuesday past pupil Fiona Watson spoke to the Junior and Senior High Performance Sports classes. Fiona has worked with the Southern Steel and the Pulse Energy Highlanders and now works for High Performance Sport New Zealand with elite rowers as a Performance Analyst.

She gave the classes insight into her time at SKC, her role at High Performance Sport NZ, the athletes she works with and what is required to be at the top level, as well as what opportunities are available working with professional sports athletes.

Past Pupil Mads Harrop Records Debut EP!

Past Pupil Mads Harrop is using her musical talent in more ways than one.

Mads has been studying Music, with a focus on studio production and composition at Otago University, and recently recorded her debut EP at Studio Sublime in the Waitaki Valley.

Her track Contagious World is on high rotate at Auckland's 95bFM and if you head to their website 95bfm.com/top10 and vote for the song, there's a good chance it'll end up in the top 10, a huge achievement!

Logan Docherty wins Club Rower of the Year at Otago Rowing Awards

Congratulations to past pupil Logan Docherty who was recently named as the Club Rower of the Year at the Otago Rowing Awards!

Very well deserved for a fantastic season that involved victories over Australia and Canada for New Zealand and then going on to claim two Premier Lightweight titles and a silver medal at the National Champs.

Well done Logan!

Sights set high – on the FBI- Kayla Guyton

Past pupil Kayla Guyton is a step closer to her dream career as an FBI agent, securing academic and rugby scholarships at Washington State University.

The four-year scholarships cover most of the cost of her degree in criminology and psychology.

Rata McMullan gets Sculpture portfolio displayed in NZQA Top Art Exhibition!

Congratulations to past pupil and 2019 Head Girl Rata McMullan who has her NCEA Level 3 Sculpture portfolio displayed in NZQA Top Art Exhibition!

Top Art is an annual touring exhibition of visual art portfolios by students who achieved Excellence at NCEA Level 3. The exhibition includes up to 60 portfolios from Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.

The exhibition is located at Massey University, Wellington until 5 March, after which it is divided into two sections that tour the North and South Islands, visiting over 30 schools, museums, and galleries throughout New Zealand between March and September. It will be at Waitaki Girls High School 3rd-7th August.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Congratulations to Amy Coutts (Year 13 last year) who has been awarded her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Amy completed it while she was still at school, but admin processing was delayed over the holiday break.

Amy completed the following:

Physical Recreation: Running, Football and Horse riding

Skills: Hockey Coaching, and Horse Care

Service: Youth Group leadership, Food Bank and Coaching

Residential Project: Outward Bound

Adventurous Journeys: Outward Bound, and at School with Mr Dixon.

Well done to Rhea Ratgali, Fergus McMullan and Fern Mcrostie who were awarded their Bronze Award recently.

1970 1st XV Reunion

Calling all those from the 1970 1st XV for their reunion which is set to take place at the Waitaki Interschool game this year. The dates for the get together are 2nd and 3rd of July.

Terry O'Neill makes New Years Honours List 2020

Happy New Year to our St Kevin's College family and friends!

It was wonderful to see the New Years Honours list for 2020 has a familiar name in it, Terry O'Neill. Terry is a past pupil of St Kevin's College, leaving to earn his teaching degree and then returning to be a member of staff for a number of years.

Congratulations to you Terry, who has been a fixture at local sport for a number of decades now, it certainly is well deserved!

Holly Edmonston wins gold at UCI Track World Cup

Congratulations to past pupil Holly Edmondston who was part of the NZ Women's Team Pursuit who won gold at the Cambridge UCI Track World Cup last night.

They were too fast for world champions Australia, defending the World Cup gold they also achieved last weekend in Hong Kong. Well done Holly and team!

Past Sporting Blue Recipient- Logan Docherty

And last but not least for our past Sporting Blue highlights is Logan Docherty! Logan received his sporting blue for Rowing last year, and he was also the Outstanding Sportsman of the College.

His achievements included; Most Improved Male Novice (2017), Training and Attitude Cup (2017), Most Improved Junior Rower (2017), South Island Secondary Schools Boys U16 Single Sculls Bronze (2017), finalist in the category of Rowing at the Aoraki Secondary Schools Sports Awards (2017). New Zealand Rowing Nationals Men’s U19 Double Sculls Bronze (2018) and Outstanding Sportsman of the College (2018).

Logan went on to be named Network Waitaki ‘Team of the Year’ for his results at the New Zealand Rowing Nationals. Following that, Logan was successful at National trials-being selected in the New Zealand U21 Rowing Team. Where he claimed Gold in the Men’s Coxless Quad Sculls and Gold in the Men’s Eight. He and his team winning the ‘Rusty Robertson’ Trophy for New Zealand for the first time in five years. Recently he has been selected into the Otago Senior Men’s squad to compete in the Interprovincial Competition in October 2019.

Past Sporting Blue Recipient- Courtney Kerin

Our next SKC Sporting Blue past recipient to highlight is Courtney Kerin! Courtney received a Sporting Blue for Kayaking in 2010.

During her time at school Courtney came 1st in the Junior Women and 4th in the Women sections at the Freestyle Nationals/NZ Team Selections. She also came 1st in both the Junior Women and Women sections of the NZ Freestyle Kayak Series.

Courtney gained selection in the New Zealand Junior Freestyle Kayaking team, travelling to Augsberg in southern Germany for the Freestyle World Cup where she placed 3rd in the Junior girls event. Her successes saw her awarded the Kayaker of the Year at the Aoraki Secondary School Sports Awards. She was also awarded the Junior Sportsperson of the Year at the Waitaki Sports Awards.

Instead of returning to St Kevin's College for Year 13, Courtney was offered a scholarship to the New River Academy- a travelling school with a focus on kayaking, with some study and a dose of different cultures along the way, taking her to Uganda, the US and Canada.

Courtney travels to the US every year and competes in the pro circuit in freestyle and creek racing, as well as some SUP [stand up paddleboarding] events. Since 2010, she has competed in every kayaking World Cup and World Championship, winning three medals– two bronze and a silver. She was also selected as one of only six athletes in the world to represent freestyle kayaking at the 2012 London Olympics.
