Senior Art Trip 2021

 Dunedin turned it on for the SKC Senior Art Trip to Dunedin last month! Weatherwise it was a T-shirt and jandals day. Artwise it was a colourful, visual, creative and informative experience for the senior photographers, painters and sculptures.   

The Dunedin experience opened up the world of art to our students and how you apply art to career paths.

Our Itinerary included:

- Tour of small Art Galleries in Dunedin Central 

- Gallery De Novo - Works by Phillip James 

- Olga - Guest artist Phillip Madill 

- Blue Oyster Galleries  - Guest artists - Miranda Bellamy and Amanda Fauteux

- Moray Gallery - Works by Liz Abbot

- At Olga and Blue Oyster Galleries -Students were able to listen to the guest artists and ask questions about their artworks.

- Dunedin City Art Gallery in the Octagon - Learning session with John Neumegen (Art Gallery Educator) in the Gallery, tour of the Exhibits including Guy Ngan, Scott Eady and Octavia Cook.

- And finished off the Art Trip with a guided tour of the Dunedin Art School.

Burns Memorial Art Exhibition (50th Anniversary)

Congratulations to the following SKC students whose artworks were selected to exhibit in this year's Burns Memorial Art Exhibition (50th Anniversary) to be held at the Forrester Gallery.

Waitaki Wearable Arts Sponsorship

This is a fundraising event for the St Kevin's College Home and School. Waitaki Wearable Arts will be held on the 18th of July 2020 at St Kevin's College, Oamaru.

Three category themes have been chosen which will allow the designer plenty of scope for the artist to explore their creative side: Aoteara Naturally, Architecture and Avant-Garde. We are looking for category sponsors as well as an overall sponsor who could secure naming rights.

Looking for Mannequins

We are on the lookout for mannequins for our student wearable arts event. Do you have a mannequin lounging on your sofa, on a shelf at the back of your shop, or hiding in the corner of your garage? Would you like to donate it or lend it for the SKC wearable arts student showcase?

We would need them for the rest of Term 1 and Term 2 for students to build their wearable art garments on.

Rata McMullan gets Sculpture portfolio displayed in NZQA Top Art Exhibition!

Congratulations to past pupil and 2019 Head Girl Rata McMullan who has her NCEA Level 3 Sculpture portfolio displayed in NZQA Top Art Exhibition!

Top Art is an annual touring exhibition of visual art portfolios by students who achieved Excellence at NCEA Level 3. The exhibition includes up to 60 portfolios from Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.

The exhibition is located at Massey University, Wellington until 5 March, after which it is divided into two sections that tour the North and South Islands, visiting over 30 schools, museums, and galleries throughout New Zealand between March and September. It will be at Waitaki Girls High School 3rd-7th August.

Please note the SKC Home & School will be running a separate Waitaki Wearable Arts Event as a fundraiser for the 18+ category.

We have had enough interest from local and out of town schools for a small Student Wearable Arts Event at St Kevin's College. The date we have decided upon is the evening of Friday the 26th of June.

The purpose of the event is to raise the profile of the Arts in Oamaru and to give students, emerging artists, and established artists an opportunity to develop their wearable art skills in a local context.

Dunedin Symphony Orchestra Music Education Tour

At the end of last term we were lucky to have Jen Cattermole and Sandra Crawshaw from the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra music education tour come and visit us.

The tour involved a talk and workshop around one of the pieces the DSO is performing in August, called 'From the Southern Marches' by local composer Anthony Ritchie. Because the piece is about the history of Otago right from first contact between Maori and Pakeha, it uses Maori musical instruments (taonga puoro). 

They brought with them taonga puoro, for the students to listen to, learn about, and play. They also spoke to us about how the piece links to the history of the Otago region.

Year 12 & 13 Art Trip

On Friday the 7th June the Year 12 and 13 Visual Art students travelled to Ōtepoti for a day of Art exploration.

They arrived in Dunedin and split into two groups, the Year 12 Photographers spent the day at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art where they were hosted by photography technician Thomas Lord. Students learnt about working in the lighting studio and setting up portraiture lighting. They took a range of photos which were then turned into negatives and used in the darkroom. Students developed their photos the old fashioned way and experimented with cameraless photography making photograms.

The Year 12 painters and the Year 13 students spent their day exploring the art galleries in Dunedin City. They visited Gallery De Novo, The Blue Oyster Project Space and Milford Galleries learning about the different types of art that each gallery caters for. We then spent the afternoon at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery with John Neumegen looking at the Tony De La Tour exhibit “Us Vs Them” and exploring ideas of light vs dark. Students then spent an hour painting in the gallery classroom. These paintings can be viewed on the Dunedin Public Art Gallery website by following this link:

The day concluded with a tour of the Art School looking at the various studios and student work. They arrived back in Oamaru tired but also inspired and ready to get stuck into their portfolio work.

Principal's Comment

Kia ora Kevinians and Supporters of the College

Today we presented the Student Mentor badges at weekly Mass. Last term, Mr Harris held a training day for seniors who wished to take on this important peer support role. The aim of the training was to give the mentors the skills to direct younger students towards the help or services that they need, in a friendly and accessible way. Thank you to the team for the valuable work they are doing.

Today we welcomed artist Ayisha Green to the College for the first of two collaborative workshops, with an emphasis on well being. Year 13 student leaders, Abbey Mabon and Rata McMullan, applied to the Waitaki District Council's 'Creative Communities' for the funding to run the events. Today, 30 students from all year levels who are taking part in the workshop, have been challenged to focus how art can support us with hauora. Thank you Mrs Plunkett for supporting this student led initiative.

Finally, I wish to acknowledge the Community Trust of Otago and the Home and School for their generous combined contribution of over $50,000 to support of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) project. Our plan is to invest in equipment and training for the Technology Faculty to support the implementation of the new digital technology curriculum. This an exciting and future-focused initiative.

Pasifika Treasures Exhibition

Recently, the Pasifika Treasures Exhibition was held at the Opera House here in Oamaru. Mrs Plunkett, our Head of the Arts, attended the exhibition with 9 of our students who had art work in the show.

Year 9 students created lino prints and Year 10 students created screen printed tote bags. All work had an environmental message, focused around the Pacific Islands. The artwork was for sale and overall $140 was made, which will be donated to the Pasifika Community!

It was lovely to catch up with Ilaisipa Tahaafe, an ex-student of St Kevin's College (pictured below), who is now in her first year of teaching at Oamaru North School.

Konnichiwa!

Yesterday, students from the Buzan school, who have been visiting our school this week, were presented with certificates in assembly, celebrating their successes during their time here at St Kevin's.

The students then performed some Japanese songs and dances for us. Thank you girls, it was wonderful to see!

Thank you to Isla Harrington and Riya Tennis, student photographers, for capturing this event.

One thing the students have been getting up to this week is putiputi (flower) making, out of harakeke (flax). Māori traditions were followed and a kakakia (prayer) was said before the harakeke was cut, to thank Papatuanuku (earth mother), Ranginui (sky father) and our tupuna (ancestors). The girls then gave their finished putiputi to a friend, as the first one always has to be given away.

As part of their commedia dell'arte topic, our Year 11 and 12 drama students took part in sword fighting training! Thank you to Iain Clark, Oamaru's well known fencing teacher, for coming down and running the session.

On Monday, Year 7 pupils from St Joesph's School enjoyed soap and lip balm making as part of their technology class at St Kevin's College with Mr Simpson.  Here are some pics of the finished products.

Singing Festival 2018

The SKC Auditorium was alive with the sound of music on Thursday, August 30, as the annual Singing Festival took place.

The quality of this years' performers was very high and judges Mrs Bridget MacKenzie, Chantelle Bradfield-Stranger from WGHS and Jacob McGeown from WBHS admitted to a bit of difficulty with their final decisions. Well done to everyone who participated and a big congratulations to our top performers listed below.

SKC filmmakers number 1

Congratulations to all our budding filmmakers whose films were shown at the Filmmakers in Schools Festival and Awards night on Wednesday August 22. The film "Noah's Ark" from SKC team Noah Martin, Jonte Kydd-Law, Lewis Weatherley and Jayden Hetet-Morris, took out 1st place in the Best High School Film category and 1st in People's Choice Award. Jonte also took out 1st place for Best Actor. Take a look at the winning film below :)

Another SKC team, featuring Barnaby Brown, Carl Alegado, Prajit Brij and Alexander (Alex) Houston, also took out a prize, placing 3rd in the Water Theme category. They were also nominated for the Best High School Film category. Check out their movie below.

Fenella Ballantyne, Krystalee Sheehy, Vannisah Ramu and Grace Firman also received a nomination for their film "The Milkman" in the same category.

Mekeisha Hurley, Chloe Tillard, Adam Devon and Ella Cochrane also entered a film on Water Pollution which was shown at the festival.

Well done to everyone who took part! A big thank you to Maddy Maxwell and Bridget Ellis for the running the programme and event, and to Mrs Plunkett for arranging for our students to be apart of it.

Budding Filmmakers Take 3

Our budding filmmakers have completed their min-movies. Head along to The Filmmakers in Schools Festival and Award Night on Wednesday, August 22 to see the finished creations and vote for your favourite.

The festival begins will be held at the WBHS Auditorium at 7pm. See you there!

Budding Fillmmakers Take 2

Our budding SKC filmmakers spent their final session with A Stones Throw Productions shooting their short films and learning about the process of editing . The filmmakers are expected to edit their own work, adding any additional sound, music and special effects. The completed films will be shown at the Filmmakers in Schools Festival & Award night at the Waitaki Boys High School auditorium on Wednesday, August 22 at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $3 for a child, $5 for an adult and $15 for a family.
