Congratulations to Year 13 Theology students Rachel Blakely, Jessica Grasmueck, Oliver Hanning, Samara Halkett, Amelia Mabon, Luke Mullally and Dominick Yanzick who have all passed their Theology papers. Once again we congratulate Mr Mullally for keeping his record of a 100% pass rate.

Waitaki Interschool Netball

There was a battle of epic proportions on the netball courts at the College today as the College hosted Waitaki Girls High School for our annual interschool. With the entire College out in support our Senior A & B Netball Teams put in an outstanding effort and whilst the Senior A's did not manage to put a win away (score 23:21 to Waitaki) it was certainly not for lack of fire and spirit. The Senior B's however can be congratulated on a great win over their counterparts, coming out on top with a 30:16 score.

Pounamu Taonga Ceremony

The Pounamu Taonga (Greenstone Treasure) Ceremony was held at the last College assembly of the term. The majestic greenstone piece, which was a gift to the College and usually resides in Mr Olsen’s office, was the focus of our liturgy. The qualities of beauty, strength and resilience were used to inspire our Senior A & B Netball girls and our 1st XV Rugby boys to perform to the best of their ability in the Waitaki Inter-school, as well as to farewell our five German GAP students as they complete their year at the College. The College performed a spirited haka at the conclusion of the School Prayer.

Aoraki Elite Sports Academy

Tasman Forgie, Micheal Hanningan, Ryan Esselink and Justin Rangi were selected to attend the Aoraki Elite Sports Academy in Lincoln this term. Tasman and Ryan told us about the Academy:

“At the Sports Academy based at Lincoln University we experienced what it was like to be a tertiary student, living amongst the students in their accommodation and including all aspects of university life. We were also exposed to various specialists in the chosen fields which benefited our sporting choice. These included a nutritionalist, sports psychologist, specialist coaches and numerous sports trainers and physios. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our experience and met many new friends from around the Aoraki region”

Special Character - Confirmation

Confirmation has been our focus these last few weeks and we have four students in our St Kevin's family being confirmed this Sunday. We welcome the St Kevin's extended family to join us on Sunday at 9.30am, St Patrick's Basilica.
Assembly took a colourful turn this week with the liturgy presentation from Mr Nyika and his Year 10 class who spoke about celebrating our unique gifts and talents. Our community continues to grow in it's diversity and Mrs Powell and her Maori class shared skits to illustrate Manaakitanga - "Kiwi Hospitality", acceptance and tolerance - virtues that are examples of the Special Character of St Kevin's College.

YEAR 13 COMMON ROOM
A group of Year 13 students have been working hard on their own "extreme makeover" redecorating the old Stables classroom into a new space for the Year 13 Common Room. They would be grateful for any donations of tables, chairs and couches that the community might have and anyone able to help with these can contact the College Office. Thank you.

STUDENT ILLNESS
As the end of the school term approaches we ask parents to continue to be vigilant regarding student illnesses. In particular we have been advised from the community that school sores are particularly prevalent at present. We remind parents and caregivers to please contact the school via the Absentee Message Service if your child is away.

Bellissimo Performance

Students were treated to a performance by chamber music group Bellissimo at assembly this week. Rowan Newton (clarinet), Francis Liardet (piano) and Mackenzie Scott (vocals) performed at the Regional Chamber Music Competition earlier in the term and received the Adjudicators Award.

Rowan is also the St Kevin's College student representative for the Oamaru Youth Orchestra and anyone interested in joining this wonderful group of local musicians should speak directly with her. The Youth Orchestra meet each Tuesday after school and perform at a number of events throughout the year.

Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards

13 students were presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards at assembly this week. Sean Hand and Hannah Poole received Silver Awards and Hannah Caldwell, Courteney Botting, Leigh McNamara, Tui Sinclair, Jahana McLay, Ellen-Margaret Powers, Callum Knowler, Molly Farrell, Tarentaise McLeod, Lisa Nolan and Hayley Evans their Bronze Awards. Grace Malcolm who was absent was also awarded her Bronze Award. This group is a good representation of the large number of students enrolled in this scheme, most of whom are actively pursuing a successful completion of one of the three award levels. This group of students are to be congratulated for their perseverance and organisation over the past year. These awards are well deserved and are a testament to students positive attitudes, enthusiasm, social responsibility and willingness to be involved. Together these students contribute a great deal to St Kevin's.

Year 9 Science

Is it a bird ... is it a plane ... or perhaps a bit of both! Miss McLennan and her Year 9 Science classes have been busy making scale models of birds and planes in a study of the effect of the centre of gravity on flight. Using plasticine to adjust weight the students have been attempting to launch their creations as far as possible.
