Agricultural Field Trips

The Agriculture classes at the College have been busy with practical field trips for our Senior students.

Year 13 Agriculture students visited Brydone Growers last week to study organic potato cropping. The trip was very interesting and provided in depth information that will help the students to investigate and report on the production and marketing of a nationally significant primary product.

Meanwhile Year 12 students learned about embryo transfer and the benefits of using technology and genetics to improve livestock productivity on a visit to Fossil Creek Angus. (pictured below: Jack Dwyer gets hands on experience of flushing embryos!)

We are very grateful to local farmers and experts who give up their time and share their experience.

St Kevin's On The International Stage

Congratulations to former student Courtney Kerin who competed in the finals of the World Freestyle Kayak Championships in Platting, Germany over the weekend. After a tough start she showed her strength to take the silver medal in the junior womens division. Courtney has been attending New River Academy and will continue to travel and kayak around the USA and Canada before returning home later this year. Today marks the final day of our Year 12 Retreat where our students have focused on supporting others in a positive manner. We look forward to sharing images and their experiences next week. Finally a reminder that Whyte House Mass is next Sunday 3rd July.

Regional Chamber Music Competition

On Monday 13th June, five students attended the Regional Chamber Music Competition held in Timaru; Francis Liardet, Salamina Kauapa, Julia Fauth, Mackenzie Scott and Rowan Newton. This year St Kevin's College entered two groups in the competition; Hewey, Dewey and Louie and Bellissimo. All students performed admirably and were great ambassadors for the College, but a special mention must go to Francis, Mackenzie and Rowan, who were awarded the Adjudicator's Award.

Big Sing

On Thursday the newly formed Redcastle Chorale, which comprises of members from Year 10 to Year 13, attended the Big Sing Regional in Dunedin, an event the choir has been working up to all year. This year there were a record 22 choirs at the event. Each choir performed a selection of three pieces either in the morning or afternoon sessions, then selected one piece to perform in the gala concert that evening which was attended by members of the public. The concert closed with Leonard Cohen's, Hallelujah, as all the choirs joined together to perform this on mass. The Redcastle Chorale were fantastic ambassadors for the school and had a thoroughly enjoyable day of performing and listening to choral music. If you have not yet heard the choir perform, they will be making an appearance at the up and coming Choral Festival on Thursday 30th June.

Student Absences

With the winter months drawing in it is timely for the College to remind students and parents about the procedures for noted absences during the school day.

If a student has a known absence from school, eg; appointment or illness, a phone call to the College must be made first thing that morning. There is an automated answering machine which allows messages to be left at your convenience prior to the school office opening. When an absence is known in advance a note from a parent or guardian should be given to the Year Level Dean.

If a student is required to leave the College grounds during the school day for ANY reason they must first seek permission from their Year Level Dean or a member of the Senior Management Team before then signing out at the school office. Thank you.

Representative Netball

Sporting success continues for the College with several of our netball players selected for representative teams throughout the region. We congratulate all of the girls trialled and wish them the very best for the upcoming season.

Special Character - St Kevin's Feastday

A day of festivities marked a true celebration of St Kevin's Feastday this Friday. The day began with a rugby match between the two 1st XV teams from St Kevin's College and Verdon College. A strong showing from the boys resulted in a 31-5 win for the College. This was followed by an early lunch. Our liturgy in the Chapel took us back to sixth century Ireland where St Kevin established the Glendalough monastery. Mrs Austin talked about her visit to this monastic shrine. We then moved to the school Dining Room for our annual Quiz - a taste of school history, sciences, humanities, sport... something for everyone! Congratulations to Whyte House for becoming our 2011 champs with 446 points! Second with 350 points was Magee House, with Treacy third and Clancy fourth.

Lions Young Speechmakers Competition

The art of public speaking is alive and well at St Kevin's College with Deputy Head Girl Maeve Ryan taking first place at the Lions Young Speechmakers competition held in Oamaru over the weekend. Year 12 student Sean Hand was close on her heels and took second place. The competition required two speeches from each contestant - a six minute prepared speech and an impromptu two minute speech on the topic "stars". Their success will see St Kevin's represented at the national finals in Napier. Well done.
