Borton Cup Cricket Final

Tomorrow the SKC 1st XI will compete in the Borton Cup final against Union. 

This is the first time since 1999 that the team has played in the final. That was SKC's first final, and is the only time the school team has won the competition, and there are some interesting quirks about both the games.

The game in 1999 was also against Union where current 1st XI member Jack Cameron's father (Glynn) and grandfather (Peter) both played in the game for Union. Peter was also the captain of the team. 

In the SKC side, current player-coach Craig Smith played in the game as a schoolboy (Year 10 at the time) taking 4 wickets, and Regan George's brother, Matt, was the captain of the team in 1999! Future Otago Highlander Matt Saunders was also a part of the team.

Good luck to the boys and we look forward to the game tomorrow which starts at 11.30am at Whitestone Contracting Stadium!

Sights set high – on the FBI- Kayla Guyton

Past pupil Kayla Guyton is a step closer to her dream career as an FBI agent, securing academic and rugby scholarships at Washington State University.

The four-year scholarships cover most of the cost of her degree in criminology and psychology.

Top 5 Boys Basketball- footage from Nationals 2019

Some footage of our Top 5 Boys Basketball team who are competing at Nationals this week.

They've had 3 from 3 so far beating Hillmorton 91-63, Te Aroha 87-80 and Hornby 104-71.

Corbyn Hocken Aiming at 2 NZ Titles

Corbyn Hocken was busy over the weekend and this week competing for national titles in both basketball and trapshooting.

Waitaki Trampolinists Target National Titles

Well done Josh Collins!

"It is Josh’s first time competing at the national event. The St Kevin’s College pupil has only been trampolining for two years, but has made remarkable progress in a very short time.

This year, he has stepped up to the 15-16 age group and won bronze medals at the CSG Classic and Upper South Island championship."

Farewell to Obirin High School Students

Our Obirin High School students left on Sunday to return home.

Their week days were busy with ESOL classes but our visitors also had the opportunity to get out and about, exploring the Waitaki District and some of what it has to offer!

The farewells began at assembly on Wednesday where the Obirin students were presented with certificates. A mini basketball tournament between the students and the SKC Junior Boys and Girls basketball teams followed on Friday.

Once again, a BIG thank you to those who have hosted students in their homes.

We wish our new friends all the best!

Farewell, Margaret!

We are sad to announce that Margaret Crossley is moving on after 20 years of loyal service to SKC. Margaret has been a cheerful face in both the kitchen and the cleaners’ departments over two decades. We will miss you, Margaret! We wish you all the best for your future!

Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa, My name is Cameron Yeoman and I’m a year 12 student studying at St Kevin’s College. I have been nominated to run as a Student Representative for the B.O.T of SKC. My key attributes that I can bring to this role, are integrity, leadership and my ability to communicate with all students on different levels as proven by my awards within cultural endeavour at the school.

If elected, I will level the playing field and treat everybody's points of views and suggestions as equals, while doing this applying my best leadership skills to conveying these ideas to the board trustees to get the best possible outcomes.

Over my last four years at the college, I have proven my leadership skills through successful running of events and earning gold service award for voluntary work, within the community. If given the opportunity to represent my fellow students I will do my best to uphold the values of the school and seek the best possible outcomes for students.
Francesca Black 

Board of Trustees Student Rep. Nominee - Personal Statement:

I am Francesca Black, a year 12 student here at the College and I am interested in becoming the Board of Trustees Student Representative for 2019. I have always been interested in being a leader, with being Head Girl at St Joseph’s Primary School, and taking on service work throughout this year in order to achieve the Service Awards. In my past years at the College, I have also taken part in sporting endeavours, where I have enjoyed working with people within the school and the wider community.

I believe that it is important that all student voices are heard within the College and I would like to take an active approach to this role and ensure that the student voice remains alive for the upcoming year. I am also interested in viewing school life from a different perspective, and using this to the advantage of not only the school as a whole, but in particularly, the lives of those within the school community. I would like to contribute to making this school a better learning environment for our students through this opportunity, and this is why I am interested in becoming the Board of Trustees Student Representative for 2019. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to seeing where this opportunity takes me.

Cara Anderson 

Board of Trustees Student Rep. Nominee – Personal Statement:

I think that it’s really important for students to be able to have a voice in the future of our school, as well as for us to have insight on its direction. I want to do this for experience, the understanding and for the chance to do something that could, potentially, have a positive impact on our school family and community. I want to be able to make quiet voices heard and understood, to offer perspective on topics that otherwise may not be touched on at all.

As a member of the Youth Council, I’ve already gained understanding of the conduct and importance of such meetings, as well as gained insight into how they can work for and help to improve our community.

I think accountability is important, working my best to try and complete work and goals to high standards. While holding high ambitions, I am also able to look at things objectively, working my best to set out realistic goals that can help to achieve what I want in the long run. I have a genuine interest into the inner running of things and feel that not only will I be able to apply skills that I currently have to this position, but will also be able to gain valuable new skills I will be able to apply all thought my life.

I am able to not only communicate my own ideas, but to listen to their thoughts and help to convey them and their significance. I believe in the importance of giving voice to those that are otherwise voiceless and feel that I would work with dedication to let them be heard. Beyond this, I feel that at the core of it, I would be a good candidate for Student Board Rep. because I genuinely care about our family, our future and our values.

Nathan Cundall 

Board of Trustees Student Rep. Nominee – Personal Statement:

My name is Nathan Cundall and I believe that I should be chosen to be on the board as a Student Representative because I am trustworthy, I get things done and I am a hard worker who pays attention to my surroundings and what goes on around the school.

I am 17 years old and I enjoy fishing computers, English, History and making things. I enjoy fishing, running, gym and biking in my free time. My favourite classes are English, History and M Tech.

I have never been on the board before or ever done a job like it before but I would like to give it a try and experience it for myself. I have always had an interest in these sorts of things but I have never given it a go. I am a people person and I like to socialise with others. Therefore, I believe I should on the board for this position.

I have good leadership qualities as I like to take charge and enjoy leading and working in groups. I am European, Fijian and Indian so therefore I would love to represent the students on the board.

St Kevin’s College Student Representative Election for the Board of Trustees

Nominations are invited for the election of one Student Representative to the 2019 St Kevin’s College Board of Trustees. A nomination form and a copy of this notice is being distributed to all eligible voters on the student roll. Further nomination forms can be obtained from the school office. 

Nominations close at noon on Friday, 7 September 2018, which is 14 days before the election date and may be accompanied by a signed candidate’s statement. 

The voting roll is open for inspection at the school and can be viewed during the hours the office is open. There will also be a list of candidates’ names for inspection, as they come to hand, on the St Kevin’s College Blog, Student Noticeboard, Daily Notices and the e-newsletter. 

The poll closes at noon on Friday, 21 st September 2018.

Budding Filmmakers Take 3

Our budding filmmakers have completed their min-movies. Head along to The Filmmakers in Schools Festival and Award Night on Wednesday, August 22 to see the finished creations and vote for your favourite.

The festival begins will be held at the WBHS Auditorium at 7pm. See you there!

Finals for St Taki U15 10s

Good luck to all our SKC St Taki team members who are competing in Under 15 10s finals this week. The big game will be held in Dunedin on Wednesday. We wish you all the best!

SKC 1st XV knockout Wakatipu

The SKC 1st XV team are through to the Otago national co-ed schools 1st XV championship finals following a brilliant semi-final on Wednesday, August 15. The team played against Queenstown's Wakatipu High School, finishing 31-10. The 1st XV have already had a stellar season, winning the coveted Blood Match trophy back from WBHS. We wish all our boys the best for the final!

Farewell Obirin

After three weeks of learning, exploring and making new friends, SKC students and staff farewelled our new Obirin friends. The farewells started on Monday with a special assembly where the students were presented with certificates to mark their time at St Kevin's College and offered their thanks for the time spent here. On Tuesday, the Junior Girls and Boys' basketball teams battled it out against Obirin teams in a farewell match. Both teams played very well, though it was SKC that came out on top for both the girls and boys. The Obirin students left for home early Wednesday morning. We wish them all the best!

The Bishops Shield

Good luck to all SKC students who are competing in The Bishops' Shield competition from August 10-12. The students left the College this afternoon for Gore where they will take part in Drama, Debating and Speech competitions. 
The competition has been run by the Diocese of Dunedin for the past 75 years and is the biggest cultural tournament of the year. All the best everyone!

Budding Fillmmakers Take 2

Our budding SKC filmmakers spent their final session with A Stones Throw Productions shooting their short films and learning about the process of editing . The filmmakers are expected to edit their own work, adding any additional sound, music and special effects. The completed films will be shown at the Filmmakers in Schools Festival & Award night at the Waitaki Boys High School auditorium on Wednesday, August 22 at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $3 for a child, $5 for an adult and $15 for a family.

Nominate a student to see the aurora australis

How amazing would it be to see the aurora australis?

St Kevin's College students have been invited to enter a competition to see the aurora australias.
The competition is being run by astrophotographer, Damien McNamara, who is looking for two students to accompany him on a flight over the Antarctic in April 2019.
The once-in-a-lifetime experience is part of the Flight to the Lights trip, organised by Otago Museum director and former Nasa Space Telescope Science Institute public outreach head Ian Griffin. McNamara was part of the first trip in 2017 and is again seeking nominations for Waitaki District students in Year 11 to 13 who are interested in Art, Science or Photography and would like to come along for the experience.
Students must be nominated by a parent and a teacher and be comfortable travelling on a long-haul flight. Travel to and from Christchurch and accommodation is not included.

Goodbye, Mr Lee!

This week we farewell our Mandarin teacher, Mr Leon Lee. Mr Lee is off to Singapore where he will be studying a Masters degree in Supply Chain & Logistics at Nanyang Technological University. A gifted cellist, Mr Lee recently treated us to a beautiful rendition of You Raise Me Up at Mass. We wish him all the best for his studies!

The St Kevin's College Swimming team are competing in the Otago Secondary School's Championships in Dunedin on Sunday 20th of May. The U15 Boys have started the South Island 7's tournament with a bruising come from behind win over Nelson College 24-20.  Sebastian scoring after the final hooter from 60m out.   Keep it up team!
