Caritas Justice Leadership Conference

Recently some of the Year 12's from the Caritas team were lucky enough to go to Dunedin to attend the Caritas justice leadership conference, along with the other schools of our diocese (Kavanagh College, St. Peter's College, and Verdon College).

The students reported it was an amazing experience and really opened their eyes to the importance of service and the work Caritas does around the world. The students will talk more about the Caritas Justice Leadership Day, and about Lent, at assembly tomorrow.

Here are some photos from the workshop, which was held at Mercy Parish Centre. All SKC participants agreed the sunrise alone (taken near Katiki Beach at 7.40am) was worth the pre-dawn departure time, and had set them up for the fantastic day ahead.

Investiture Mass 2021

It was an exceptionally proud day for the friends and families of our student leaders for 2021, as the Top 6 and Prefects were presented with their badges at the Investiture Mass in the College Chapel today.
As role models of our school they pledged their commitment to the responsibilities they have accepted and promised to continue to uphold the Special Character values of the College.

Congratulations to our student leaders and thank you to Mrs Plunkett and Anish Raj for capturing images of this special occasion, and Sarah Clapperton for taking the video.

Waitaki Week Blessing

At assembly on Wednesday the captains of our sports teams carried out the pounamu blessing, to bless all of our teams who have competed, or are yet to compete in Waitaki Week.

May the fluidity of the water that has shaped this stone over the years be an inspiration for positive encounters in the spirit of fair play.

May the physical weight of this stone inspire you to have the strength to engage with both passion and pride.

All the very best to our 1st XV in their match today at 1.30pm.

Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders Meeting

On Friday 22 May some Y13 students sat in on an EREBB (Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders) Zoom meeting hosted by fellow Edmund Rice school Ignatius Park College, Townsville.

Maddison Bleach, Barnaby Brown, Jessie Kelland, Maddy Neal and Jayden Hetet-Morris joined their Australian counterparts along with Cardinal Newman College in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The meeting focused on how students had managed and were still managing educational issues during the Covid-19 lockdown in their respective countries. While NZ and Australian schools were back it was interesting to hear that Argentinians would have to wait until September for a possible reopening.

Student Profiles: Alex Houston

Introducing Head Boy Alex Houston!

1. What are your interests?

Outside of school I really enjoy being on the farm, tinkering with any piece of machinery or machine I can get my hands on, more often than not my car, playing football and spending time with friends and family.

2. What are your plans for next year?

Next year I am hoping to join the airforce as a pilot, but I am also looking into doing an Agricultural engineering degree at Canterbury University and potentially looking at going back to England to visit family.

3. What have you been doing to keep busy in your bubble?

A variety of things really, I have spent a few days here and there sorting out firewood and limbing trees around our property, helping redecorate our house with new coats of paint, we all take the dogs for a walk around the farm most days which is a good way to relax, and other odd jobs that needed doing that we now have time for.

4. Any words of wisdom you'd like to share?

Make the most of every day, and make time to call friends and family, it is a tough time but if we support one another it can make it that bit easier

5. What is something you've achieved that you are most proud of?

I think the thing I am most proud of is getting to where I am today and being able to look back at the journey that led to it

Justice Leadership Day

Ten senior students from the SKC Caritas team met with their counterparts from Verdon College, St. Peter's College and Kavanagh College for a Justice Leadership Day in Dunedin last Wednesday.

Run by the Caritas Education team, the students were also joined by Julianne Hickey, the Director of Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand. They discussed how our NZ Catholic agency for justice, peace and development is part of a vital network of 165 Caritas agencies around the world, explored how the funds we raise annually for Caritas are used, and looked into career and volunteer opportunities with Caritas.

All agreed it was a very valuable learning experience.

GirlBoss New Zealand Workshop

On Monday we had Alexia Hilbertidou from GirlBoss New Zealand visit us. GirlBoss New Zealand was founded with the mission to close the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths (STEM) and Entrepreneurship and Leadership.

They empower confident, resilient, future-ready, young women to lead and change the world. Did you know that only 2% of NZ CEOs are women? They are working to change that!

34 of our young women attended her session. Prior to the workshop 29% were interested in a STEM career, and after the workshop 94% said they were more likely to follow a STEM pathway. And, all left feeling more confident to create, lead and problem solve.

Here are some of the takeaway messages from our attendees:

“Even if I’m not a house captain, head girl or the smartest in the class, I can change the world. I can make a difference.

“If you want opportunities not many people get you need to make choices not many people make.”

“I’ve never felt so inspired, best workshop ever!!”
