Last night Mrs Sutton and four students attended a Genetics Otago open lecture at Otago University. The speaker was Dr Laura Boykin, a senior TED fellow and winner of the International Gifted Citizen Prize in 2017. Laura heads the Cassava virus action project, in Eastern Africa. This is a network of researchers, farmers and industry people, collaborating to use a pocket DNA sequencer to improve the management of cassava viruses in east Africa.
This really opened their eyes to see both how science and technology can combine to solve a huge humanitarian problem. They were very lucky that afterwards Laura took considerable time to talk to our students and inspire them to see what can be possible.
