Moeraki Marae Visit

Our Year 11 students visited the Moeraki Marae recently, to learn all about Māori culture. Nola Tipa of Te Rūnanga O Moeraki Marae, educational advisor of Ngāi Tahu, ran the session for the day.

Nola taught all about the 6 main aspects of Māori culture, kotahitanga (unity), whānaungatanga (family), tohungatanga (knowledge), kaitiakitanga (guardianship), wairuangatanga (spirituality) and rangatiratanga (leadership). Students were able to relate these to our own FIRE values of family, integrity, respect and excellence.

After a lovely walk around Moeraki, visiting the Māori cemeteries, students reflected on what they had learnt throughout the day, and reiterated this in small group performances.

We are fortunate to have a good working relationship with the Rūnanga, and are very thankful for being invited to visit the Marae. To show our appreciation, the students performed our school haka for Nola.
