On June 4th, a group of Year 11 girls attended a "Girls with High Vis" careers day at Benmore Power Station. It was organised by Meridian Energy and Connexis (an Industry Training Organisation with a focus on the Infrastructure Industry).
The objective was to show young women the range of career pathways available to them, in a sector dominated by males (only 6% of this large NZ workforce are women). It was a very worthwhile day, with the girls getting to meet young employees, tour the power station with them and spend time in the workshop. They got to have some real "hands on" experience of the kind of work involved eg. engineering, electrical, electronics and metal fabrication.
We are very grateful to the companies and people involved for sharing their time and expertise. A similar day for boys may be offered later this year.
