Young Enterprise Scheme

Yesterday our Young Enterprise students were in Timaru attending the pitch event for the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES).

YES is an opportunity for students to unleash their inner entrepreneur, where they set up a company in groups and create their own product or service and bring it to the market.

YES, a nationwide competition which runs throughout the year, includes five challenges, with the second one known as 'The Pitch'. Each is worth points, and at the end, the regional team with the most points will go to the national final, held in Wellington.

  • Challenge 1 – Product Validation
  • Challenge 2 – The Pitch
  • Challenge 3 – Promotion
  • Challenge 4 – Sales
  • Challenge 5 – Annual Review

Our four SKC companies and their products that were pitched yesterday include:

1. Kiwi Cases: Environmentally friendly phone case with a Kiwiana theme.

2. Straight Outta the Shed: Recycled calf seed bags turned into reusable bin liners.

3. Tauwahi: Twizel Valley Tourism Tea Towels.

4. Whakarite: Modern key ring holder organiser.

Jerome Misiloi, Frano Flannery and Seth Humphries delivering their pitch to the judges.

Our students are learning first hand how to work in teams, and make decisions based on products they've developed for specific target markets. They will also develop a range of skills to help them in their career and in life, and have the opportunity to consult with, and create networks in their community.

With $25,000 in national prize money up for grabs as well as regional awards, regional cash prizes and tertiary scholarships, we wish our companies all the best as they further develop and launch their products!
