CAN YOU HELP OUR KAPA HAKA & PASIFIKA GROUP? 

Kia ora, malo lelei, talofa lava, warm greeting to you all. 

Calling all Kapa Haka or Pasifika dance enthusiasts....... 

Our Kapa Haka and Pasifika group have grown since last year and we have a large group of over 25 students in total. We are beginning to practice for the Otago Schools Maori and Pasifika Festival in Dunedin. This is during Term 3 on Thursday the 18th of July. We are aiming to have two seperate performances for the day. However with more students we now have the need for more help with the tutoring of these groups. If you have a knowledge of Kapa Haka especially actions and using taiaha for the boys or if you can help with our Pasifika group please contact us. We can be flexible with practice times and our students would greatly appreciate the help.

MATARIKI CELEBRATIONS 

Our Kapa Haka and Pasifika groups are planning to have a hangi to celebrate Matariki on the first Friday of Term Three (25th July). The hangi will also be a fundraiser for our performance at the Otago Schools Maori and Pasifika Festival later in the term. We would greatly appreciate donations of vegetables (potatoes, kumara, pumpkin etc) and meat to put in our hangi. There will be a box to drop off your veges in the office during the first week back. Prices for each hangi meal will be confirmed next term. Tickets will be available from the office from Monday 21st July (Week 1). Please support our cultural groups and enjoy some kai with us on the 25th of July. 

Nau te rourou, naku te rourou ka ora te iwi.
With your food basket and my food basket, the people will be fed.

Home and School would like to congratulate MARY STUART on winning the rugby jersey which was drawn today. We would like to thank the following - the Eckhold family for donating the jersey, Andrew Connochie for framing it and the parents and friends of the College for selling tickets.

We are all looking forward to seeing many of you at our Art Auction on 2nd August, it will be a fantastic night.

A Special Mass

Mass took on a special air today with the traditional pounamu taogna blessing ahead of the big interschool tomorrow.  Good luck to all of the students who will be participating in the days events.

Teen Ag Nationals

Good luck to our TeenAg teams, Ella, Holly, Georgia and Brittany as they compete in the National Finals at Lincoln University tomorrow (Friday 4 July). The girls have shown great initiative and determination in preparation for the event. They are lucky also to have such supportive parents who have coached them, helped them to fund raise and will accompany them to the event.

A sausage sizzle and cup cake sales were held at SKC.  Thanks to the generous contribution of our community, $455 was raised.  A huge thank you must go to the sponsors of the Teen Ag team; RD1 Oamaru, Oamaru Veterinary Centre and Fossil creek Angus as well as the "team kit" makers Sutherlands and R K Signs. The ODT, Oamaru Mail and Waitaki Herald have also shown support by promoting the event.

Regretfully due to injury the Girls rugby team will not be participating in the interschool.

Some Weekend Sports Results

While the 1st XV suffered a narrow loss of 17-16 to John McGlashan with a couple of unlucky calls, the U14.5 took the win from Waitaki Boys' High School 22-28.  The U16 also stood their ground against Timaru Boys' High School with a 43-10 win.  Some great rugby action!  Also winning on the field were our boys football team who returned from Geraldine with a 4-2 over Geraldine Red.

Speech Domination

The dominance of the College in the field of public speaking was brought to the fore on Sunday with the Lions Clubs Secondary Schools' Speech contest.  In the Year 9 & 10 section Ceilidh Brookes placed first and Amy Hunter second, while in the Year 11 & 12 Jino Kunnethedam was first, Scott Ruddle second and making it a clean sweep Sydney Telfer placed third.  Congratulations!
