Principal's Comment

Dear Parents and Friends of St Kevin's College,

This week has been rather condensed with Otago Anniversary Day on Monday and Otago wide professional development for secondary teachers occurring on the Tuesday. The focus of the Teacher Only Day was to gain a shared understanding of the newly aligned NCEA Level 2 standards, directly from the national experts. The professional discussion and new resources that have been shared on the day were appreciated and will insure that St Kevin's College keeps abreast with curriculum and assessment developments.

This weekends Bishop's Shield Competition which is being hosted at St Kevin's this year, was showcased at our Wednesday Assembly. Both Junior and Senior Drama's took centre stage, with performers having the chance to become comfortable acting before an audience of peers. We wish the students and staff every success and cordially invite our community to join us over the weekend. On Saturday evening, the Bishop will celebrate Mass in the College Chapel at 7pm. I look forward to meeting parents and whanau during the course of the weekend.

The All Blacks Road Show and the Maadi Cup rounded out a week of academic, sporting and cultural endeavour. Our best wishes go to our rowers in the finals on Friday and Saturday as they compete in the Maadi Cup Regatta at Lake Ruataniwha, the Bishop's Shield team and the Athletics team who are competing at the South Islands this weekend in Nelson. We also have kayakers at the Nationals next week and Geography and Physical Education Field Trips as the term concludes. We pray that everyone involved achieves to their potential and they have safe travel.

Maadi Cup Progress

( Hot off the satelite - Boys U18 4+ lightweight placed first in their B Final giving them a top 10 medal finish and the 5th fastest time overall)

During the past week the St Kevin's College Rowing Team have been competing at the Maadi Cup Regatta held at Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel. The week has produced a mixed bag of results but several of our crews will be competing in finals today. We wish them all the very best for their races today and congratulate them on their representation of the College.

Rugby Road Show Visit

The Webb Ellis Trophy came to town along with the team from the Rugby Road Show and students and staff were excited to have a special visit to the College during Period 1 yesterday. Some light heartened competition gave Tina-Marie Oakes and Matt Brien the rare opportunity to put on the white gloves and hold the trophy for a treasured photo, and Tim O'Malley "haka-ed" his way to some new boots for the upcoming season. Our Argentinian Yr13 trio of Facundo Briones, Gaston Bazan Montalbetti, Nicolas Plaza Crespo also got a close up look at the Webb Ellis Trophy ...

Bishop's Shield Team Preview

The Bishop's Shield Junior and Senior Drama Teams gave the College a sneak preview of their performances for this weekends competitions. With all elements of the event coming together Mrs Austin and her team would like to thank the families who will be hosting a billet from one of the visiting schools and also Mrs Linda McClelland and the Home & School for catering the weekend.

The Tug of War continues today but as was evident at last weeks round, the full strength of the student body was committed to their House honour, with each year level given a "best of three" chance.

Principal's Comment

Dear Parents and Friends of St Kevin's College,

This week our Year 11 students have been away on their annual Retreat at the Waihao Marae near Morven. College Retreats have a different focus depending on the year level and in the case of our Year 11 class it was an opportunity to look at building relationships with their peers and others in a Maori setting. Outdoor challenges are very much a part of the retreat and our thanks to Miss Casey our Year 11 Dean and her team for the time and energy they direct into the programme.

There has also been a mix of sporting and academic events on during this past week, including the postponed Kavanagh Exchange and the Annual Aoraki Junior Maths Competition. We have also had a group of athletes represent the College at the Otago/Southland Secondary Schools Competition and the Special Character that all of our students exhibit while they are away on behalf of the College is to be commended.

Our best wishes go with our rowers as they compete in the Maadi Cup Regatta at Lake Ruataniwha this week.

Staff v Students Tug of War

The mighty strength of the teaching staff at the College was too much for Senior Students at the eagerly anticipated Tug of War Competition between staff and students held yesterday in front of the Auditorium. Inter-House competitions are being held on the sports field today ... watch this space for results!

Portobello Marine Experience

Our Year 13 Biology students are away putting theory into practice at the Portobello Marine Laboratory, incorporating an overnight stay at Quarantine Island in the Otago Harbour. Students look forward to this trip every year and our thanks to Miss McLennan, Mr Ryan and Mr Olsen for offering their scientific expertise in facilitating this trip.

This course is aimed at all our coaches / managers /parent helpers and will be a great help and kick start to the Winter Sports Season.

Year 11 Retreat

This week our Year 11 students have been enjoying their retreat at the Noho Marae out at Morven just north of Oamaru, incorporating an overnight stay. The good weather we have had over the last couple of days will have served the students well, with the "slippery slide" a popular activity. As always our thanks to Miss Casey and Mr Farrell for co-ordinating the retreat and also the tangata whenua from the marae and staff who took students through the programme.

Principal's Comment

Dear Parents and Friends of St Kevin's College

On Monday evening the Waitaki Sports Awards were held at the Oamaru Opera House. I was very proud to see the number of St Kevin's Blue Blazers honoured during the course of the evening. Congratulations to the award recipients and nominees. Special mention of the Senior Girls' Rowing Eight who won the Teams section and past pupil, Courtney Kerin who won the Sports Woman of the Year for Kayaking.

This week was a "Green Week" at the College. The calendar has been cleared of interruptions to academic studies and we aim to minimise the time out of class for students. With this in mind, at Assembly this week, I reminded students of the importance of keeping up to date with their class work. As the summer sporting season comes to a conclusion and cultural activities such as Stage Challenge take more of students time, it is critical to keep monitoring progress. For our senior students it is important that internal assessment is given priority over co-curricular activities. It is all to tempting to accept an "Achieved" grade rather than striving for "Excellence" when under pressure. Whanau Mentors are talking to students about managing their time and commitments. With a significant part of the term completed, it is timely to reflect on commitment and overall commitments.

Congratulations also to the many sporting and cultural achievers listed in the blog this week. You bring accolades to the College Family and we acknowledge your efforts.

The last weekend in March is the Bishop's Shield Competition which is hosted at the College. Can I urge families to consider taking a billet for this event as with almost one hundred students requiring accommodation, our resources will be strained. Please contact the Office if you can help.

Aoraki Swimming Success

A team of swimmers traveled to Timaru to compete in the Aoraki Secondary Schools Swimming this week.

Libby McGee placed 2nd overall in the Senior Girls' section. On the way she picked up a 1st place in the 100m Butterfly. She joined with Olivia Brien, Olivia Macaulay and Isobel Ryan to win both the Senior Girls' Medley Relay and the Senior Girls' Freestyle Relay. This helped the SKC Senior Girls' Swimming Relay Team to take out Second Best Girls' Secondary School in the Aoraki region. A great result for a catchment of 200 girls up against school that can choose from 1000 female swimmers.

Oliva Brien and Kaleisha Jones placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the Senior Girls' 33m Butterfly. Kaleisha also led a junior team of swimmers into the Senior Girls' Freestyle so they could experience the rough and tumble of that level of competition. Niamh Farrell, Darcy Green and Tahlia Green gave a good account of themselves and did not let Kaleisha or the College down. The remainder of the team represented well; Molly Farrell swam in the Senior Girls' section while the junior boys; Matt Brien, Regan Holland and Thomas Pickles competed well.

Thank you to the five parents who traveled to support their children; a very high ratio of parents to participants! A special thanks to the parents who helped the Eastern Districts Committee with the paperwork and organisation on the day.

Cyril Bassett VC Speech Winner

The entire Kunnethedam clan traveled to Alexandra to support Jibi (Yr12) at the RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition for the Otago Southland area. In his speech he spoke about how ANZAC was significant to all New Zealander's and about the possible confusion as to what it meant to be a soldier due to the influence of today's modern world. Jibi will travel to Wellington to compete in the National Competition at the beginning of April where he will vie to win an opportunity to travel to Turkey to take part in the 97th commemoration of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli and recite the RSA's Ode to the Fallen in front of the expected 20,000 people crowd.

Swimming National Age Group Championships

Last week Isobel Ryan (Yr11) and Libby McGee (Yr13) traveled to Wellington to compete in the Long Course (50m) Swimming National Age Group Championships. Libby attained 12th place in the 17-18 year old girls 400m individual medley and Isobel came away with two silver medals for 15 year old girls 100m free and the 50m back, improving on last years times. Isobel was also part of the Eastern Districts girls relay team gaining a bronze medal and took 4th place in the 50m free in an exciting close race. Well done!

Willows Cricket

A combined SKC/WBHS 1st XI travelled to Rangiora for the annual fixture against The Willows Cricket Club on Sunday, March 11th. It was a warm, humid day as we arrived to enjoy our pre-match cup of tea and a cheese cracker. The captains Tim O'Malley and Trevor Thornton (ex-SKC) did the toss and it was agreed that The Willows would bat first. The Oamaru side had an early breakthrough when SKC player/coach Tim McCormick got through the defences of one of their NZ under 19 squad members Michael Davidson in the first over. Rylie Rooney (WBHS) struck soon after removing the other opener and they were 10-2 and in early trouble. A quality partnership of 81 followed involving NZ u19s batsman Connor Neynens and Christchurch BHS batsman David Wakefield to gain the momentum and lifted the run rate considerably. The leg spin of Waitaki BHS player/coach Stephan Grobler was introduced and had immediate results, breaking the partnership in his first over. Jeremy Smith (SKC) then chimed in from the other end, removing McClure cheaply and dried up the runs and had all batsman in trouble with his considerable swing and seam. Grobler had another and the Oamaru side were on top heading in to the lunchbreak at 136-5. After the break, Neynens had brought up a superb hundred and with it a compulsory retirement, which left the tail to negotiate the remainder of the innings. Shaun Kelliher (SKC) took to the crease with his leg-spin and was able to bowl his 10 overs cheaply (0-30) to keep a lid on the scoring and the bowling partnership with Jason McGimpsey (WBHS, 2-23 off 7 overs) restricted The Willows to 185/8 after their 50 overs, a score the Oamaru side were confident in chasing down.

The WBHS coach/captain pair of Grobler and Lachlan Kingan negotiated the new ball effectively, Grobler taking the aggression to the bowlers, getting the run chase off to a rollicking start with a number of cleanly-struck boundaries. Kingan was the first man out which brought captain Tim O'Malley to the crease. Grobler and O'Malley dominated proceedings with a quality display of timing, and running between the wickets on the large ground to have the run chase in control at the tea break at 100-1. After the break, Grobler continued to ride his luck, moving on to 71 before he was caught in the deep. McCormick was next man in, and the SKC pair kept the scoreboard ticking over and the target dwindling in a partnertship of 25 before McCormick was bowled, with 40 still required. Jeremy Smith came and went cheaply and there were some nerves in the camp as all were counting down every run. Isaac DeBuyzer (SKC) helped halt Willows' momentum with a patient 10 before being dismissed. Brodie Flannery (SKC) was next man in and the Maniototo pair of Flannery and O'Malley combined well, running hard between the wickets to have the target down to 16 off 10 overs when O'Malley was dismissed for a fine, mature captain's knock of 50. Number 8 Rooney was at the crease briefly before being plum LBW off the thigh pad to keep the Willows in with a sniff at snatching an unlikely victory. McGimpsey arrived at the crease with the target down to single figures, and he and Flannery held their nerve to secure a famous victory, Flannery scoring the winning runs in the most unlikely of fashion - sneaking a quick single and scoring 5 with wild overthrows taking the score past 186, the Combined SKC/WBHS 1st XI claiming the R.S Eveleigh Trophy for the first time since 2002.

Thanks go to Denise More, Hamish McMurdo, Mike Seddon, and all others who did the background work in trying circumstances to ensure the team got there and things ran smoothly, the hard work playing off with a win on the paddock

SISS Rowing Medals

The South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Regatta was held in Ruataniwha last weekend and the team from St Kevin's College made it's presence felt on the podium with four medals in total, including the first SKC boys medal for some time! What a great lead up to Maadi!

Both Helena Grahame and Tiana Mihaere have been selected into the Sth Canterbury U19 Girls Team with Tom Halkett and Hamish Robertson being selected into the Otago Boys U17 Team. Well done too you all - we wish you well at all your regional and Premiership Tournaments.

Helena also recently competed in Australia for a Nth Island Girls U17 Team in a NZ Pacific Competition. Well done Helena.

Principal's Comment

Dear Parents and Friends of St Kevin's College

This week the College gathered for a Lenten liturgy that challenged us all to reflect on how we are living our day to day lives and more importantly how we are growing spiritually. Thank you to Father Wayne for his practical words of advice in the liturgy. As always, thanks to Helen Mulheron for music and Karen Austin and her team of student leaders for their support.

Over the weekend, the six student leaders took part in an Edmund Rice Leadership Camp in Dunedin. The focus of the retreat was sharing advice and experience with leaders of schools in the Edmund Rice tradition throughout New Zealand. St Thomas of Canterbury, Liston College, Kavanagh College and St Peter's College, Epsom were all represented. Thank you to Mrs Eatherley for driving and supporting the students during the weekend.

The date for the College House Drama Evening has been confirmed this week. For your diary, the event will be held on Thursday 21 June at 7pm in the College Auditorium. Other dates to note are the Teacher Only Day on Tuesday 27 March, making a long Exeat Weekend, The Bishop's Shield weekend on 30 March and the Excellence Assembly on April 4.

Students received feedback on their progress and engagement this week as mentors discussed Fortnightly Indicators with students. I also took the opportunity to share my expectation with students at assembly. It is important to clarify that "progress" is a measure of personal academic progress and that 3 is the minimum expected grade. It is pleasing to see that staff and students are involved in teaching and learning discussions about how to improve grades. Please discuss your son or daughter's results which should be recorded in their Student Planner.

There have been many sporting achievements over the last few weeks with some of the results following later in this blog. Sadly the Kavanagh College summer exchange was abandoned on Wednesday due to wet weather.Hopefully the Gillette Cup cricket matches to follow will enjoy better weather.

Special Character - Lenten Tradition

As part of our Lenten tradition the school took part in a Reconciliation Liturgy. Students were reminded about being consecrated during baptism and anointed with the sacred oil of chrism. The liturgy was led by Father Healey and senior students. Miss Mulheron was the accompanist.

Students are also collecting non-perishable food items as part of the annual Lenten Foodbank Appeal. Each morning before school coloured collection containers are put out in the Office Quad for students to leave their donated food items.

Pipers in Action

The warm North Island weather is the perfect setting for the National Pipe Band Championships in Tauranga and our St Kevin's pipers and fellow band members were gearing up to play the Test Selection this morning. This "Piping Extravaganza" attracts a large number of competitors and supporters from around the country with the Oamaru Pipe Band up against 25 other bands in their grade and 63 bands in total.

Year 11 Retreat Notice

YEAR 11 RETREAT, NOHO MARAE, MORVEN; 19-21 MARCH, 2012

Dear Parents/Caregivers

The annual retreats are approaching quickly. We travel to Waihao Marae, Morven (About 35 minutes north of Oamaru) where students will be taken through a programme led by a combination of tangata whenua and St Kevin’s staff.

Year 11 students will be split into two groups; while one group is on retreat the other groups will attend classes as usual.

Group 1will leave St Kevin’s on the morning of Monday 19th for an overnight stay and return for 3.00pm on Tuesday 20^th of March.

Group 2will leave St Kevin’s on the morning of Tuesday 20th for an overnight stay and return for 3.00pm on Wednesday 21^st of March.

This notice will allow students to arrange any job commitments. Group lists will be displayed on the school noticeboard. $60.00 (Day students) or $50.00 (Boarder) will be charged to your school account. Food is supplied by the hostel, hence the different costs.

Permission slips have been sent home. Please return it to the school office by Wednesday March 14^th. Boarding parents should note this permission slip will be signed on their behalf by the Hostel Manager. If you have any concerns please contact him directly or email one of the address above.

Students should bring sleeping bag, pillowslip, towel, toilet bag and change of clothes. Activities involve flatwater kayaking, orienteering and some team initiative games. Our policy is challenge by choice.

Ellerslie Connection

Congratulations to past pupil Emily Kelly who, as part of the Design Team for the Beca, Hollings & Ferner exhibit, won the Supreme Award at the Ellerslie Flower Show.

The exhibit was based on the Mackenzie Power Scheme and the contribution made by Max Smith, including his contribution to Ruataniwha Rowing also. Emily studied at Lincoln University following her time at St Kevin's College.

Pipes and Drums of St Kevin's College

As part of our preparation for the National Pipe Band Championships being held in Tauranga this week, St Kevin's members of the local band played at assembly on Wednesday. Year 13 Cultural Captain, Nick Parsons, is the Pipe Major of the Waitaki Districts Schools Pipe Band. Nick will also have the opportunity to play at the World Championships in Glasgow later this year. Piping and drumming are fostered by local tutors who instruct at the College. Any interested students are welcome to take lessons.

SISS Triathlon and Duathlon Success

On March 4 the South Island Secondary School Triathlon and Duathlon Champs were held down at the Oamaru Harbour. St Kevin's had over 24 students participating in the event with a variety of results in the triathlon section, the most successful being Corbyn Bisschops, Tarentaise McLeod and Molly Farrell who came 1st in the Senior Mixed Triathlon Team.

Cycling Success

With her most successful results to date Yr11 student Holly Edmondston was our 'Golden Girl" at the NZ Track Cycling Nationals held in Invercargill last week, bringing home a haul of 3 gold medals and a silver.

The U17 Girls Points race proved a cracker with Holly winning the final sprint and jumping into the top spot. She claimed a deserved victory in the U17 Girls Individual pursuit finishing just 3/10th of a second off the fastest time recorded for the age group over 2000m and then teamed with Olivia Podmore to win another gold in the U17 Girls Team Sprint. Holly finished the meet with a silver in the U17 Girls 500m Time Trial, missing gold by just 1/100th of a second. Holly will return later in the year to attempt to lower the NZ record for the individual pursuit. Congratulations!

SKC Hospitality Support Group

SKC HOSPITALITY SUPPORT GROUP

The College is looking for a group of 6-8 parents/caregivers to be part of a hospitality team to help with morning and/or afternoon teas during College Interschools and other similar events. This is a great way to participate in college life, getting to know other St Kevin's families.

Principal's Comment

Dear Parents and Friends of St Kevin's College

At Mass last Sunday evening, the Edmund Rice Singers were commissioned. Thank you to Helen Mulheron for her work with the choir who are already showing considerable talent. The Edmund Rice Singers enrich the Sunday evening Mass with their music and instrumental support and we look forward to hearing them contribute to our liturgies during the year.

On Monday evening our newly established Sports Council met for the first time this year. Details of the council's membership and mission are included later in the blog. I am pleased to be able to work alongside such keen, talented and committed members of the Oamaru community. Their knowledge and skills will help to enhance sports participation and enjoyment at all levels within the College. One of the initiatives being explored by the Council is a Sports Awards Evening to be held at the conclusion of the winter sports season. It is envisaged that this event would include a guest speaker and presentations of sports awards in a convivial setting. This will be an opportunity for our wider community to celebrate sporting achievement at the College. To help with your diary planning, the tentative date proposed is Saturday 15th of September.


On Tuesday evening our Home and School Association had their AGM. Following the official segment, the girls who went on the India Immersion Trip gave a presentation about their experiences.  I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank the Home and School team for the work that they do for the College Community. Without their help, we would not enjoy many of the extras that make education at St Kevin's College so special.


Following meetings with the Principals and Sports Coordinators of Waitaki Boys' and Girls' High Schools this week, I am pleased to be able to report that the combined Colleges will be holding an inter-school fixture on June 29. We plan to extend the range of sports being played on this end of term  Friday and anticipate most students being involved in at least one activity during the day. The community will then gather to support the College in the traditional netball and rugby games as usual in the afternoon. More details will follow closer to the time.

Rowing Regatta

During the weekend students from St Kevin's College attended the Canterbury Mazda Secondary Schools regatta at Lake Hood. There were some encouraging performances from several of the crews.

Movie Fundraiser

St Kevin's College Netball is launching their fundraising drive with a mover fundraiser "The Hunger Games" 7.15pm, 29th March at Oamaru Movie World 3. At just $13 each, tickets can be purchased from the school office, Oamaru Vets and North End Pharmacy.

The Hunger Games:

In the face of drought, fire and famine America has crumbled and been replaced by the Capitol, a regime that controls the country with brutal force. Each year, two residents from twelve districts are selected and forced to compete in "The Hunger Games" a televised, to-the-death event which all citizens are forced to watch. When Katniss Everdeen's younger sister is "selected" to participate, Katniss volunteers to taker her place, pitting herself against bigger, stronger competitors.
