Online Payments

I wish to alert caregivers to a change in the MUSAC payment system for credit and online payments.

The credit card surcharge incurred by schools using the online payment system is not sustainable as we are a "not for profit organisation" and have no way of recovering this shortfall in the payment. In order to give transparency about the additional cost involved, the finance package now separates out this cost so you can see the service cost. (2.5% +GST for credit cards)

This is the only fair way to address this issue as the other option was to build in online costs to the initial figure which meant everyone was charged, even if you did not use the service.

As always, you may pay at the school office. Please do not deposit money directly into the school account directly, as the time and energy required to sort and reconcile these random payments against your account is an unfair burden on office staff and increases the overall administration costs which we are trying very hard to keep to a minimum.

Thank you for your understanding and support with this matter.

Despite the challenge of re-establishing out wifi system after a possum arced the 11,000 volt supply line a week ago, classes have continued with a touch of the traditional "chalk and talk". Preparations have focused on revision and our junior assessment week has gone smoothly. With the wifi up and running, students will complete Asttle assessment next week.  The "Asttle" assessment benchmarks us against national data and is important for us as we monitor progress. Students cannot study for this type of open-ended assessment but it is important that they try their very best so that we get a true indication to an individuals strengths and areas for improvement.

I am pleased to be able to see and report tangible progress with our court resurfacing. The wet weather earlier in the week has added to the complexity of the project as additional drainage has needed to be included in the scope of work.

In some ways, it is a blessing to have had this happen at this time because it would be disappointing to have a flood spread silt over a newly installed product. Phase one will be completed within the next fortnight, weather permitting.

Finally, I wish to alert caregivers to a change in the MUSAC payment system for credit and online payments. The credit card surcharge incurred by schools using the online payment system is not sustainable as we are a "not for profit organisation" and have no way of recovering this shortfall in the payment. High Performance Workshop - December 6

The St Kevin's Sports Department has organised a workshop for its High Performance Sports students. The event will be held on Thursday, December 6 and will feature double Commonwealth Games gold medalist, David Nyika.

Nyika, 23, competed in his first Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 when he was just 18. He won the final in his weight division, securing the gold - a first for New Zealand since 1990! He went on to place first in the men's heavyweight competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.

The workshop will begin at 9am in the SKC Auditorium with a presentation where David Nyika and clothing company owner, tetraplegic and spinal cord researcher, Nicko Maximus, will speak to all Year 9 and 10 students. The focus of their presentation will be around challenges, opportunities, resilience and having goals.
Nyika will then run a series of small group fitness sessions for SKC's High Performance Sports students.

The visit of the White Ribbon Riders with their anti-domestic violence message has been a focus in the College this week.  On Tuesday, we had five teams from our school enthusiastically participating in a short video competition held at Waitaki Boy's High School.
The projects were focusing on family violence issues and were supported by the Etu Whanau, local secondary schools, Youthline, Safer Waitaki, Waitaki District Council, A Stones Throw Productions, Waitaki Multicultural Council and Oamaru Police. I would like to thank all the students involved for their passionate contribution to this venture. Thanks also to the mentors who gave up their day to support each group. Mr Van Booma from WBHS provided the following link to the student work.

Yesterday we welcomed the Riders to the College and students had the opportunity to hear their address and talk to them personally after the formal welcome.

Next week we head into junior assessment week. I wish students well with their final assessments and encourage them to do some extra revision to ensure they are well prepared.

May God bless you all

White Ribbon Ride

On Thursday, the College welcomed the White Ribbon Riders, along with local Police, who came to speak to our junior students about domestic violence. The students greeted the group with a powerful haka and listened intently to several riders who shared stories of choosing to break the cycle of family violence in their homes. Thank you for sharing your important message with us!

Equestrian at St Kevin's College

St Kevin's College is looking to lease horses for 2019. Horses need to be capable of Equestrian Events including Show Jumping and Dressage and need to have good temperaments. These horses will be ridden by three riders from Germany over the course of the year. St Kevin's College will meet the costs for dental and farrier work as well as winter feeding and medical costs throughout the year. Horses will be vet checked at the beginning of the lease and at the end of the lease period to ensure soundness. We are also looking for lease horses for less capable riders.

Please contact Jo Walshe 0278401330 if interested.

Our second group of campers returned from Lake Middleton today, looking a little jaded but none "worse for wear".  Thank you to the staff and helpers who accompanied the two groups, using your knowledge and skills to inspire the students in one of the most majestic outdoor settings. On behalf of students and whanau, a big thank you for your commitment to this programme at a time when many schools are retrenching.
This week the sound of heavy equipment has echoed around the grounds as MCM Contracting completed phase one in the turf installation. A thin layer of asphalt has levelled the rough surface ready for the second phase which involves the underlay and turf being laid later this month. The final section will be complete early next year. Please note there is still turf left over in the old handball courts. Anyone from the community is free to help themselves to these sections of old turf.

Finally, preparations are underway for the White Ribbon Rider's visit next week. On Tuesday there are a number of students participating in a video production competition to be held at Waitaki Boy's High School. The project is about Family Violence and is supported by the Etu Whanau, Schools, Youthline, Safer Waitaki, Waitaki District Council, Stones Throw Productions, Waitaki Multicultural Council and Oamaru Police. We wish the students all the best with this venture.

May God bless you all

Our graduation mass and prizegiving on Monday evening was a superb celebration of student achievement. The evening had an authentic family feel which we have come to treasure as part of our special character. Thank you Father Wayne for your wise words to graduating students and thank you also to the many staff and students who contributed to the success of the evening. I am particularly indebted to Mrs Walshe and Mrs Burton for the "behind the scenes" attention to detail which enabled the evening to flow so seamlessly.
As Principal, I am always trying to encourage students to strive for personal excellence. I was truly honoured to present the Dux plate to Levi Sherman.

We also farewelled our current Board Chair Mr Steven Bolstridge. We thanked for his devoted service to the College over the last 6 years.

Finally, I wish all those preparing for the year 10 Camp, all the best. We hope the weather holds for your time at Lake Middleton Lodge.

May God bless you all

Young Enterprise

The SKC Young Enterprise team have finished the year off with a well-earned 2nd in the Aoraki regional competition. The team took their recycled fire bricks to the final regional competition at Timaru's Ara on October 30th, where they competed against six other teams. After presenting their product to a panel of judges, the team won the Innovation Prize - $250 worth of Whitcoulls vouchers - and came 2nd overall for the Spirit of Enterprise, narrowly missing out on the national finals in Wellington. They were also the only group to sell products on the night.
The team, Year 13 boys Daniel Ruddle, Broady Taylor, Cameron Dodd and Liam Elliott, have had a prosperous year as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme, winning over $1600 worth of prizes as the various competition. Well done boys!
A big thank you to Mr Tim Hitchcock for his leadership, support and organisational help and to Mr Alan Grant for his help with the grinder that was used to make the bricks.

3D Printing of Bones

Year 10 Science students have been learning about Anatomy and joints this week. As part of their studies, Mr Seddon has created models of bones using the 3D printer. This students will then used a variety of materials including play dough and pipe cleaners to add cartilage, ligaments and muscles to the models. The models are made from PLA plastic and can take several hours to print.

Whitestone Cheese Visit

Today our English language learners went on a trip to Whitestone Cheese, here in Oamaru.
Tour guide Flora told us about the factory, cheese making and after watching a short video, we went into the factory to see the cheeses being made. All of us were wearing yellow high visibility vests, which seemed very appropriate. After this, we had a chance to taste different cheeses, varying from mild to sharp. Some of the students shuddered, others loved it. It was a fun learning experience about something so very Kiwi as cheese. Thank you to Mrs Foster and Mrs De Paauw for organising our trip.
