Principal's Comment

Dear Parents and Friends of St Kevin's College,

Thank you to both the staff and the many parents who attended the parent-teacher conferences this week. The College gymnasium was rich with conversations, providing the opportunity for feed back, sharing of concerns and goal setting. If anyone missed the opportunity to catch up with staff and stall have concerns, please contact the College office to arrange a time to meet or alternatively we can arrange for a Dean to give you a telephone call.

Last weekend, Karen Austin, Paula Eatherley and I together with seven Year 13 students attended the Edmund Rice Conference. This was hosted by St Thomas of Canterbury College in Christchurch. The conference title was “Reach out with Your Hands”.

The weekend was well attended and had a strong social justice theme focusing on our youth. Speakers included; MP- Jacinda Ardern, Entrepreneurs, International Consultants, Lawyers, Teachers, Social Workers, Police, the Urban Maori Authority – John Tamihere and the Young New Zealander of the Year. The weekend was very successful, despite the Principal  putting petrol in the diesel van and receiving the "wooden spoon" on Monday.

Following on from the Edmund Rice Conference the week itself has also been packed with activities that foster our Special Character.  At Wednesday's Assembly we celebrated "excellence in serve" presenting Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards and having local Lions Club members speaking to the College. This resulted in a meeting on Thursday establishing a Leo Club sponsored by the Waireka Lions Club.  On Friday we held the  Edmund Rice Feast Day Mass and the Head Shaving for Cancer which are reported later in the blog.

We wish the Stage Challenge team every success for their performance on Monday evening in Dunedin and hope they reap the benefits of the intensive practice they have been doing.

May God bless you all
Paul Olsen, Principal
