Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Friends of St Kevin's College,

I am pleased to report that the Art Auction held last Saturday evening was a great success. Sandra and I were  honoured to be able to open Redcastle to the community and wish to formally thank the Home and School Association for the tremendous amount of work that they put into decorating and beautifying the residence. I would like to echo the thank-you to the team mentioned later in the blog. With your help, skill and attention to detail, the evening had an air of panache and  flair.  My special thanks go to Anne Marie Forgie, our gracious and hard working coordinator. The $10,000 raised will go directly into projects that befit students.

For the last few days I have been representing the Otago and Southland Principals at the Secondary Principals Council held in Wellington. I have returned with a clearer insight into a number of issues facing secondary schools nationally. The Minister of Education's pre-budget announcement of the intended introduction of performance pay and altered class sizes prompted considerable debate. I am personally keen to continue to raise teacher capability in a profession that already produces some of the top results for the OECD countries. As always with this type of announcement, more detail is required before we will be able to understand how this policy will impact on the St Kevin's College community. The group was also briefed by Dr Stoop, Head of  the Education Review Office. He highlighted his concern of under achievement of Maori and Pasifika students nationally.  As a College, the Board of Trustees acknowledges these priorities and is looking at how to work with our community to respond to these challenges. I have returned encouraged that St Kevin's College has its focus in line with national priorities and our latest initiatives will improve student outcomes.

May God bless you all
Paul Olsen, Principal
