Year 11 Quake Study

On Friday 1 March 2013 the Level One Geography class went to Christchurch to investigate the effects of the recent earthquakes that the city has experienced.  This involved a visit to the Greendale Fault and the Lyttelton epicentre.  On the Friday we spoke with Vicki Mulholland who owns the property where the earthquake ruptured the land.  On her farm we went and had a look at the fault line and the effect that the earthquake has hand on the land.  It was amazing to see the power of nature.  Then we visited Kirwee Model Primary school where the Principal spoke to us about the effects that the earthquake has had on her students the community and the future of her school, given the government's plan to close and combine schools within Christchurch.

Once in Christchurch we visited the office of Roger Sutton, the CEA of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority.  His office is on the top floor of the tallest contained building in Christchurch.  It was here that we learnt about the role of CERA and saw some of the red zone from an aerial view.  Once finished here we spoke to Gary Moore, the ex Mayor of Christchurch, about some of the effects on people and the natural environment out in the Eastern suburbs.

In the evening Mr Brand took us out to the residential red zone in the Eastern suburbs and to the demolished site of QE2, as well as out to Sumner and then along the summit road.  It was here that we got a view of the city of Christchurch from the Port Hills.

In the morning we awoke, strapped on our helmets and went for a cycle tour of the CBD red zone.  We spoke to the Civil Defence around their role in the Earthquake and visited many creative masterpieces in the city, that artists have made as icons to represent where Christchurch is at as a city.  We also visited the site of the CTV building where the majority of the lives were lost.  This was a touching moment for all of us.  After our tour of the CBD red zone we visited the Quake City Museum and the Re-Start City Mall.

Overall the field trip was very successful and should stand us all in great stead for our external assessment that we will sit at the end of the year.  Here is hoping anyway!!
